Chapter 12 - An Offer After Dark“Absolutely not,” Emma said when Daniel showed her Martin's text.

“I wasn't going to go,” he replied. Then he paused. “A month ago, I probably would have.”
Lucy suggested giving the message to the investigators and letting them decide whether it mattered. Tessa agreed. Daniel forwarded it through a secure channel, then replied only that future communication should go through counsel.
Martin didn't answer.
On Sunday Ruth hosted the dinner anyway. Photos appeared online showing a perfectly set table and a place card labeled LILY. In the caption, Ruth wrote about grandparents being shut out by cruel misunderstandings. Friends filled the comments with sympathy.
Emma saw the post when an old neighbor sent it to her. She nearly typed a reply. Then she remembered Tessa's advice and put down the phone.
“I hate that people think I'm doing this to hurt her,” Emma admitted.
Nora sat beside her. “People who really care can ask you. You don't owe a public trial to strangers.”
That afternoon the agency investigator phoned with a follow-up appointment. She also said a new document had been submitted alleging Lily had missed a medical checkup. Emma found the confirmation email for the appointment and forwarded it immediately.
Later, while organizing the nursery, Emma noticed an unfamiliar fold in the lining of the diaper bag Ruth had given them. Nora helped her open a loose seam. Inside was a small flash drive wrapped in tissue paper.
Daniel used an offline computer to examine the drive without connecting it to household accounts. Most files appeared to be recordings from the hidden bedroom camera. There were also scanned forms and a folder titled EMMA INCIDENTS.
Emma's breath caught. The videos showed her exhausted after nighttime feedings, crying quietly in a chair, dropping a burp cloth, and asking Daniel to take Lily while she showered. Innocent moments had been clipped and labeled “unstable behavior.”
One longer video had not been edited. It showed Ruth entering the room before Emma returned, taking a folder from the dresser, and saying into her phone, “We only need one judge to believe she's dangerous.”
Emma watched the screen in silence.
Then she noticed the date of the recording. It was taken the morning before Lily was born.

There had been no baby in the room yet—but Ruth had already started building a case against her.
