Chapter 14 - The Guardian Who Wasn't“Ruth isn't Lily's guardian,” Emma said, staring at the alert.

“No,” Daniel answered. “And now there's a record of someone claiming she is.”

The bank placed an immediate hold pending review and directed them to file a fraud claim. Daniel submitted the documents through approved channels. When he told Tessa, she said the attempted transfer could be relevant but warned them not to assume who had initiated it until the records were authenticated.

Two days later, the emergency guardianship hearing began. Emma wore a navy blouse Nora had pressed for her. Daniel held her hand outside the courtroom.

“You don't have to protect me from what happens in there,” Emma said.

“I know. I'm here beside you.”

Ruth sat with her attorney on the opposite bench. She looked polished and wounded, a respectable grandmother whose family had broken her heart. Evelyn sat behind her, clutching a folder.

The judge reviewed the filings and asked why emergency intervention was necessary. Ruth testified that Emma was overwhelmed and had refused help. She described the nursery confrontation as “a brief disagreement.”

Tessa submitted the police report, medical documentation of Emma's scalp injury, authenticated appointment records, and evidence concerning the hidden camera. Emma gave a clear account of what had happened.

“Did you threaten your baby?” the judge asked.

“Never,” Emma answered. “I was frightened for her because someone had me by the hair while I was leaning over her crib.”

Daniel testified next. He didn't soften anything. “My mother attacked my wife. I saw it. I stopped her. My mother should not have access to our daughter without our consent.”

Ruth burst into tears. “I raised you.”

“And I am raising Lily,” he said, his voice shaking. “I'm going to do better.”

The judge declined to grant Ruth's emergency request and set a process for any further disputed issues. Outside court, Emma exhaled as though she'd been holding her breath for weeks.

Then Evelyn approached with a folded paper.

“You think you won?” she whispered. “Ask your husband about the document he signed before Lily was born.”

She dropped the paper at Emma's feet and walked away.

It was a consent form bearing Daniel's signature.

Beside Emma's: TOO INDEPENDENT.
