Chapter 11 - The Accountant's SmileMartin Hale greeted Daniel in the lobby of his accounting firm as if nothing had changed. He wore an expensive blue suit and the same easy smile he'd used at Michael's funeral.

“Daniel, you look tired. New babies do that.”

“Did you open Mercer Home Services under Emma's name?”

Martin's smile froze for a fraction of a second. “That's quite an accusation.”

“It's a question.”

“I can't discuss confidential client matters without a formal request.”

Daniel had come with Tessa's advice ringing in his ears. He didn't shout, threaten, or try to trick Martin into giving him private files. He asked who currently controlled Lily's education account and requested records available to him as the account holder.

Martin promised to send them. He offered coffee. Daniel declined.

In the parking lot Lucy was waiting. “He called Ruth before you even reached your car,” she said, holding up her phone. “I saw her number on the screen through the window.”

“That's not proof of wrongdoing,” Daniel said.

“No,” Lucy agreed. “But it tells us who's talking.”

They met with attorney Bell's successor, Vivian Chen, that afternoon. She explained that Michael had amended his estate plan shortly before his death after becoming concerned about unexplained transfers. The original will made Daniel the principal beneficiary of his estate. The amendment established independent oversight for certain trust assets, specifically excluding Ruth from sole control.

Daniel closed his eyes. “And nobody told me?”

“We sent notices to the address on file,” Vivian said. “Some were returned. Your mother's attorney handled much of the administration.”

Lucy laid the forged statements beside the amended documents. Vivian saw the mismatch in dates at once. She promised to gather the authenticated records and coordinate with their lawyers.

That night, Ruth left a voicemail for Daniel. Her tone was soft, almost affectionate.

“Honey, I know you've been frightened. Come to Sunday dinner. Just you. We can solve everything before strangers tear our family apart.”

Daniel deleted nothing. He saved the recording to the evidence folder.

Then a second message arrived, this one from Martin.
