Chapter 11 - The Call at 6:51

Maya spent the night rebuilding phone records from five years earlier.
At 4:10 a.m., she found the call.
Caleb Voss had received a three-minute call at 6:51 on the morning Ethan died.
The number belonged to a prepaid phone.
But that phone had connected to a cell tower serving one place: the Ashford family lake house.
Richard had been there.
So had Victoria.
"I left at six-thirty," Victoria insisted. "Ask the housekeeper."
Maya already had.
The former housekeeper remembered Victoria leaving early in a white Range Rover.
Richard stayed behind.
Nathan looked at Victoria. "Then your father made the call."
"Yes."
Grace shook her head. "You still covered for him."
Victoria's voice cracked. "He was my father."
Grace stared at her. "And Ethan was Lily's father. You erased him from her life twice. First when he died. Then when you threatened us into silence."
Victoria looked away.
Nathan wanted to hate only her. It would have been easier.
But the truth was wider than Victoria.
His father had hidden evidence. His mother had hidden Grace. His future father-in-law had apparently ordered murder. Nathan himself had spent five years accepting the clean version because it asked nothing painful of him.
At sunrise, Maya received a message.
A photograph appeared on her phone.
It showed Richard Ashford sitting in the back seat of a black SUV.
Beside him was the stolen recipe box.
The message read:
YOU WANT THE LEDGER? BRING VICTORIA.
Grace read it and went pale.
"He has it."
Victoria stepped back. "No."
Nathan looked at her. "You came here asking for protection."
"Protection doesn't mean using me as bait."
"No one is using anyone."
Then another message arrived.
This one included a location and a deadline.
Old Cole Foundry. Noon.
Underneath were seven words.
COME ALONE OR THE CHILD PAYS FIRST.
Grace's phone rang at the same moment.
The caller ID displayed Lily's bedroom extension.
Grace answered.

No one spoke.
Then she heard the window alarm upstairs begin to scream.
