Chapter 17 - The Letter Margaret Burned

Margaret did not lie when confronted.
Not this time.
"I burned it."
Grace's hands curled at her sides.
"Why?"
Margaret looked twenty years older than she had a week before.
"Because Charles confessed everything. The forged signatures. The payment to Voss. Richard's threat against Nathan. He asked Grace to take the confession to the FBI if anything happened to him."
Nathan stared at his mother. "And you burned the only copy you knew existed."
"I thought I was protecting you."
"From what? The truth?"
"From losing the company, your father, your future—"
"Ethan lost his future. Grace lost her husband. Lily lost her father."
Margaret covered her face.
Grace spoke quietly. "And I lost five years believing nobody in this family wanted us."
Margaret looked at her. "I wanted you safe."
"No. You wanted me silent. Those are not the same thing."
Nathan walked to the window.
Outside, Lily was drawing with chalk beneath the watch of two guards.
He had spent his adult life protecting Cole Development because he believed it was his father's legacy.
Now the legacy looked like a locked room full of other people's pain.
"I'm going to the board," he said.
Margaret looked up. "What?"
"Tomorrow morning. Full disclosure. Every forged transfer. Every hidden payment. Ethan's evidence. Dad's confession. Everything."
"The company could collapse."
Nathan turned around.
"Then it collapses."
Margaret went pale.
Grace watched him carefully. "Thousands of people work there."
"I know. Which is why Maya is coordinating with federal investigators before we announce anything. We protect employees, not the family name."
The next morning, twelve board members filled the top-floor conference room.
Richard's vacant chair remained empty.
Nathan placed the black ledger in the center of the table.
"Before we begin, understand this: I am waiving every confidentiality agreement that protects a member of my family from criminal scrutiny."
The general counsel nearly choked.
Nathan continued.
"And effective today, I am resigning as CEO."
The room erupted.
Grace, watching from the doorway, froze.
Nathan raised one hand.
"There's one more thing. Ethan Cole left a legal heir."
Every face turned toward Grace.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
May you like
Victoria walked in wearing a hospital bandage and two police officers behind her.
"Actually," she said, "there are two things you need to know."
