Chapter 5 - The Grandmother Who Stayed Silent

Margaret arrived twenty minutes later without a driver, wearing house slippers under a wool coat.
Grace stood when she entered.
The older woman stopped as if struck.
"You look like your mother," Margaret said to Lily.
Grace's jaw tightened. "You don't get to say that."
Nathan closed the door. "Mom, start talking."
Margaret sat at the kitchen table where the hockey stick still lay sealed in a plastic evidence bag Nathan had improvised.
"Ethan told me he was married," she said. "He showed me a photograph. He said Grace was pregnant."
Nathan stared at her. "And you told me he died single."
"Your father ordered me to."
"You obeyed?"
"I was a coward."
Grace gave a humorless laugh. "That's a gentle word for it."
Margaret accepted the blow. "Yes."
She explained that Ethan had discovered a pattern of theft inside the Cole Family Relief Fund. Richard Ashford controlled several shell companies receiving fake consulting payments. Ethan planned to expose him.
"Your father begged him to wait," Margaret said. "The company was already fighting a federal investigation. Another scandal could have destroyed thousands of jobs."
Nathan's voice hardened. "So Dad protected Richard?"
"At first. Then Ethan died."
Grace leaned forward. "And after he died?"
Margaret looked at Lily. "Your father panicked. He said if Ethan's marriage became public, Grace would inherit Ethan's voting shares and control of the evidence Ethan had collected. He believed Richard would come after her."
"So you erased us," Grace said.
"We hid you."
"You threatened me."
Margaret shook her head. "I never did."
Grace pulled out the old phone and played Victoria's message.
Margaret went pale.
"That wasn't authorized by us."
Nathan slammed his palm against the counter. "Stop using words like authorized. She's a woman, not a merger."
Margaret flinched.
Then she reached into her coat and removed a sealed envelope.
"Ethan gave me this the morning before he left for Denver. He told me to open it if anything happened to him."
Nathan stared at the unbroken wax seal.
"You never opened it?"
Tears filled Margaret's eyes.
"Your father made me promise not to."
Grace took the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten note.
If I die, don't trust the accident report.
Below it was a license plate number.
May you like
Nathan recognized it immediately.
It belonged to Richard Ashford's former security chief.
