Chapter 7 - Ethan's Last Warning

Ethan's recorded face filled the screen.
Nathan had not heard his brother's voice in five years.
It nearly broke him.
"The first ledger proves Richard stole from the relief fund," Ethan said. "The second proves someone inside our family approved the transfers. I don't know if Dad understands how deep this goes. I don't know if Mom does."
Grace covered her mouth.
Ethan looked off-camera, then continued.
"Grace, if you're seeing this, I'm sorry. I should have taken you and left. I thought I could fix it first."
Lily stared at the screen. "That's Daddy?"
Grace pulled her close. "Yes, baby."
Ethan leaned toward the camera.
"The second ledger is not in the house. I gave the location to one person I trusted. If anything happens to me, find Rebecca Shaw. She knows where it is."
The video ended.
Nathan searched the name.
Rebecca Shaw had been a junior accountant at Cole Development.
She died of leukemia two years after Ethan.
Grace went very still.
"What?" Nathan asked.
"I know that name."
"From where?"
"She was my neighbor in Milwaukee. She moved into the apartment across from me after I left Chicago. She used to bring Lily diapers when I couldn't afford them."
Nathan stared. "That wasn't a coincidence."
Grace shook her head. "She never told me she knew Ethan."
"Did she leave you anything?"
Grace's face changed.
"A recipe box."
Nathan blinked. "A what?"
"She said it belonged to her mother. I almost threw it away when I moved."
"Where is it?"
"Storage unit on the south side."
They drove there with two security men.
The storage facility manager met them at the gate looking nervous.
"Ms. Miller?"
"Yes."
"There's a problem with your unit."
Grace stopped. "What problem?"
The manager swallowed.
"Someone broke into it last night."
Nathan and Grace ran down the concrete corridor.
The lock on Grace's unit had been cut cleanly.
Inside, boxes were ripped open and clothes scattered across the floor.
The recipe box was gone.
