Chapter 1 - She Knows

“She knows.”
Seven-year-old Lily Hart’s voice cut through the ballroom so cleanly that even the string quartet seemed to miss a note.
Two hundred guests turned.
Lily stood beside a gold banquet chair in a dark burgundy velvet dress, one small arm stretched across the room. Her finger pointed straight at Claire Whitmore.
Claire’s hand flew to her pregnant belly.
Beside her, Ethan Whitmore went rigid. “What is she talking about?”
Before Claire could answer, Victoria Vale shoved back her chair so hard it scraped across the marble floor.
“Stop her.”
The words came out too fast.
Too sharp.
Lily lowered her hand, but not her eyes. “I saw what happened.”
The room died around them.
Claire felt the blood leave her face. She had spent eight months pretending the past was buried. She had learned how to smile through dinners, charity galas, family photographs and Victoria’s cold little warnings. She had even convinced herself silence was protection.
Then Lily reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a tiny silver object.
A memory card.
Victoria’s expression changed.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Ethan noticed it too. He stood slowly. “Claire?”
She could barely breathe. “Lily, where did you get that?”
“Mommy’s room.”
Claire closed her eyes for half a second.
Three years earlier, Lily’s mother, Anna Hart, had died after falling from a second-story balcony at the Whitmore lake estate. Everyone had called it a tragic accident. Claire had been the last adult to see Anna alive.
And Claire had lied to the police.
Victoria moved toward Lily.
“Give me that.”
Lily stepped back.
Ethan blocked Victoria with one arm. “Don’t touch her.”
Victoria stared at him. “You have no idea what that child is doing.”
“No,” Ethan said. “But judging by your face, I think you do.”
Guests whispered. Phones rose. The gala chairman rushed toward the stage microphone, but Ethan snapped, “Nobody leaves.”
Claire’s heart hammered.
Lily looked at her again. “You were there.”
“I was.” Claire’s voice broke.
“You heard Mommy scream.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
A murmur rolled through the ballroom.
Victoria whispered, “Claire. Think very carefully.”
Claire turned toward her.
For three years, that sentence had worked.
Tonight, it didn’t.
Claire said, “I heard Anna scream because she realized someone had changed the lock on the balcony door.”
Ethan’s face tightened. “Someone?”
Claire looked at Victoria.
Lily held up the memory card.
Then every chandelier in the ballroom went dark.
A woman screamed.

Glass shattered.
When the emergency lights flickered on six seconds later, Lily was gone.
