Chapter 17 - The Hospital Confession

Three hours later, Claire lay in a private hospital room under strict observation.
The baby was early, but stable.
Lily sat in a chair beside Ethan, wrapped in a hospital blanket and refusing to let go of his hand.
Mason survived the gunshot.
Ortiz’s bullet had hit his thigh.
Under questioning, he started talking almost immediately.
Victoria had ordered the blackout at the gala. Mason had arranged Lily’s abduction. Thomas intercepted the van before Mason could deliver the child to a private airstrip.
And Michael’s crash?
Mason confessed to cutting a brake line on Victoria’s orders.
Ethan listened to Ortiz summarize it over the phone, expressionless.
When the call ended, Lily asked, “Did Aunt Victoria hurt Daddy?”
Ethan crouched beside her.
He could have lied.
He didn’t.
“Yes.”
Lily cried silently.
Ethan held her.
Claire watched them and knew something fundamental had changed. Not because of DNA. Not because of a trust.
Because truth had finally replaced performance.
At noon, Charles was wheeled into Claire’s room with a police officer beside him.
His shoulder was bandaged.
“I asked to see you before they transfer me,” he said.
Ethan’s face hardened. “Why?”
Charles looked at Lily. “To apologize.”
Lily did not answer.
Charles’s eyes filled. “I spent my life believing I could fix every bad thing with money. Then I started believing I could hide every bad thing with money.”
Ethan said, “You protected the person who killed Michael.”
“I protected my daughter because I had already lost my son.”
“You lost Michael because you protected her.”
Charles closed his eyes.
Then he reached into a hospital envelope and handed Ethan a document.
Margaret’s second will.
Police had found it in a safe-deposit box registered under a false corporate name after tracing a key recovered from Mason.
Ethan read the first page.
Margaret had removed Charles and Victoria from control of the family trust years earlier.
The controlling interest belonged to Michael’s lawful child—or, if Michael had no biological child, to Ethan’s first biological child.
Lily qualified either way under a special adoption clause because Michael had legally acknowledged her.
Victoria’s entire scheme had been pointless.
Lily was protected regardless of paternity.
Claire whispered, “Anna knew.”
Charles nodded. “And Victoria didn’t.”
Ethan looked up. “Where is Victoria now?”
Ortiz entered the room before Charles could answer.
“We found her car at LaGuardia.”
Ethan stood.
Ortiz’s face was grim.
“But she wasn’t on the plane.”
She placed a photograph on the bed.
