Chapter 10 - Inside Grandma

For ten full seconds, nobody understood.

Then Lily explained.

“Grandma’s music box.”

Margaret Whitmore had died five years earlier. Her favorite object had been a large carved music box shaped like a white house. After her death, Charles placed it in a glass cabinet in his private study.

Lily remembered Anna showing it to her the night before the balcony fall.

“She said Grandma would keep secrets because Grandpa never listened when women talked.”

Even Ortiz smiled at that.

They returned to the estate.

Charles protested as police opened the display cabinet.

The music box played three soft notes, then stopped.

Under the velvet lining sat a microdrive.

The files were devastating.

Bank records showed millions diverted from the Whitmore Foundation through fake consulting firms. Emails linked Victoria to the shell companies. Voice recordings captured Charles approving transfers and telling Anna that exposing the scheme would “burn the family to the ground.”

Then came a recording dated the night Anna died.

Anna’s voice trembled.

“I know what you did, Victoria.”

Victoria answered, “Keep your voice down.”

“You changed the balcony lock.”

“I changed nothing.”

“I watched you give the key to Thomas.”

Thomas cursed softly from where police had seated him.

“That’s edited.”

Ortiz turned. “Explain.”

Thomas leaned forward. “Victoria did give me a key. She told me Anna was planning to steal evidence and run. I was undercover. I accepted it so I could keep access.”

The recording continued.

Anna said, “If I fall, Lily gets everything. That’s what Margaret’s trust says.”

Then Charles’s voice entered the room.

“Enough.”

A struggle followed. Furniture moved. Anna cried out.

The file ended before the fall.

Ethan looked at Thomas. “Were you there?”

“No. I was outside.”

“Then who was on the balcony?”

Thomas looked at Charles.

“Ask him.”

Charles stood stiffly near the fireplace.

Ortiz said, “Mr. Whitmore?”

Charles’s shoulders sagged.

“I never pushed Anna.”

Ethan’s face twisted. “That wasn’t the question.”

Charles looked toward the window.

“Anna climbed over the railing herself.”

Claire felt cold.

“Why would she do that?”

Charles whispered, “Because someone was coming through the bedroom door with a gun.”

Ethan stepped closer. “Who?”

May you like

Charles finally looked at Victoria.

“My daughter.”
