Chapter 19 - Anna’s Last Minute

The recording did not end with Anna falling.
That was the secret.
After the scream came thirty seconds of chaos. Michael shouting. Charles begging Victoria to put the gun down. Thomas outside pounding on a locked door.
Then Anna’s voice, weak but alive.
“I’m on the ledge.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Anna had not fallen immediately.
She had climbed over the balcony railing to escape Victoria’s gun and was hanging from the stone ledge.
Michael yelled, “I’ve got you!”
The recording captured him running outside.
Then Charles said, “Victoria, help him.”
Victoria replied, “If she comes back over, we lose everything.”
Ethan’s face went blank.
A scraping sound followed.
Anna screamed once.
Then silence.
Lily was not in the room. Claire was grateful for that.
Ortiz stopped the recorder.
“That’s murder.”
Charles sank into a chair. “I froze.”
Ethan stared at his father. “You watched your daughter let Anna fall.”
“I thought Michael could reach her.”
“But you lied afterward.”
“Yes.”
“Then Michael found the evidence and she killed him too.”
Charles cried openly.
Claire felt no sympathy.
Her phone buzzed.
A news alert.
Victoria Vale had been arrested at LaGuardia while attempting to leave a restricted service area.
Rebecca Sloan was also in custody but appeared to have been paid to impersonate Anna without knowing the full plan.
Minutes later, Ortiz received confirmation: the red piano music box had been recovered from Victoria’s luggage.
Inside was not another ledger.
It was a handwritten letter from Margaret Whitmore.
Ortiz read it aloud.
To my grandchildren: wealth does not make a family strong. Truth does. If anyone uses this trust to control, threaten or silence another person, that person forfeits every claim I have given them.
Victoria had spent years committing crimes to protect an inheritance she had automatically forfeited the first time she threatened Anna.
Ethan laughed once, painfully.
“She destroyed everybody for money she could never legally keep.”
Claire took his hand.
An officer entered the room.
“Detective, we found something else in the wall.”
He carried a sealed envelope.
On the front, Anna had written one name.
ETHAN.
Inside was a letter.
Ethan read silently until tears filled his eyes.
Then he handed it to Claire.

The final line said:
If I don’t survive this, please tell Lily the truth about who you are—but only when you are ready to love her as a daughter, not as an obligation.
