Chapter 4 - The Man Everyone Trusted

Charles Whitmore was seventy-one, silver-haired, soft-spoken and famous for giving away millions to children’s hospitals.

At that moment, he was also standing on the ballroom stage reassuring nervous donors that his granddaughter would be found.

Claire watched the frozen video frame on Ortiz’s tablet.

“That’s Charles,” Ethan said.

Victoria moved closer. “A father visiting his daughter-in-law proves nothing.”

“Then why did Anna look terrified?” Claire asked.

Victoria didn’t answer.

The video continued.

Charles shut the bedroom door.

Anna backed away. “You said Michael would never know.”

“Keep your voice down.”

“You moved the money through the foundation. I have copies.”

Ethan’s head snapped up.

Charles said something too quiet to hear. Anna shook her head violently.

“No. I’m done protecting this family.”

The video ended.

“That’s it?” Ethan asked.

The technician nodded. “The file is damaged. There may be more data, but I need time.”

Ortiz stepped away and spoke into her radio.

Ethan sat down hard.

The Whitmore Foundation controlled nearly nine hundred million dollars in assets. Ethan had never managed its daily finances. Charles had.

“What money?” Ethan asked.

Victoria’s voice sharpened. “Don’t start inventing crimes because you’re scared.”

Claire turned to her. “You knew Anna was investigating the foundation.”

“I knew she was unstable.”

Ethan stood. “Don’t say that.”

“She was.”

“She was my brother’s wife.”

“She was reckless.”

“And now Lily is missing.”

The two siblings stared at each other.

For the first time, Claire saw something deeper than anger between them.

History.

Old fear.

Charles entered the security office with two lawyers behind him.

“What is going on?”

Ortiz stepped between him and the tablet. “Mr. Whitmore, I need you to remain in the ballroom until we finish speaking with witnesses.”

Charles looked at Ethan. “This is a family matter.”

“No,” Ethan said. “It stopped being a family matter when Lily disappeared.”

Charles’s gaze drifted to Claire’s stomach. “You need to think about your wife.”

Claire’s skin went cold.

The same structure. The same warning.

Think about your wife.

Think about your child.

Think carefully.

Ethan heard it too.

He stepped closer to his father. “Where is Lily?”

Charles looked genuinely wounded. “You think I took my own granddaughter?”

“I think I don’t know you as well as I thought I did.”

A phone rang.

Not Ethan’s.

Not Claire’s.

Charles looked down at his jacket pocket.

The ringing continued.

Ortiz held out her hand. “Give me the phone.”

Charles hesitated one second too long.

When Ortiz pulled it from his pocket, the screen displayed a live incoming call.
