Chapter 11 - Claire's Father

I thought it was another manipulation.

It wasn't.

Olivia confirmed it within an hour.

Claire had discovered the truth through old court files while researching the Mercer Development settlement. The man who raised her, Jonathan Vale, was legally her father but not biologically.

Martin Keller had been a young attorney working for Henry Vale when he had an affair with Claire's mother.

Claire learned the truth two years before she died.

She never contacted him.

Martin contacted her.

Repeatedly.

She refused to let him into her life.

"Why didn't she tell me?" I asked.

Olivia gave me a tired look. "You keep asking that question as if Claire had unlimited time. She was pregnant. She was managing a complicated family history. She was trying to protect you from conflicts she thought she could resolve herself."

I looked down.

She was right.

I had turned Claire's silence into a mystery when it might simply have been exhaustion.

Then Olivia showed me an email Claire had forwarded to herself.

FROM: MARTIN KELLER

Claire,

If you won't let me know my daughter, at least don't deny me my grandson.

Claire's response was only one sentence.

You are not entitled to my child because you contributed DNA to me.

I leaned back.

"So he found Mom."

"Or your mother found him."

We searched Diane's messages again.

The oldest exchange between them dated back four months.

Before Claire died.

DIANE: She won't listen to me.

MARTIN: Then we wait until circumstances change.

DIANE: And if they don't?

MARTIN: Circumstances always change.

A cold pressure settled behind my ribs.

Claire's death had been ruled a medical complication.

No one had questioned it.

I didn't want to question it now.

But I couldn't stop reading.

Three days before Claire went into labor, Diane sent Martin another message.

DIANE: Hospital plan is set. I will be there when it happens.

Martin replied:
