Chapter 9 - The Call Before the Complaint

Janine couldn't tell me everything about an active investigation, but she told me enough.

Martin Keller had contacted the agency claiming to represent "a concerned relative" and asked what evidence would justify emergency placement of an infant.

He called three days before the complaint.

That meant this wasn't panic after seeing me struggle.

It was planning.

I gave Janine copies of Diane's messages, Claire's letter, the photographs, and Rachel's statement about being pressured.

She read quietly.

"This changes the context," she said.

"Does it close the case?"

"Not immediately. But it matters."

I nodded.

I wanted instant vindication. Instead, I got process.

Maybe process was what saved people from families like mine.

After she left, I found a voicemail from Thomas.

"Evan, call me before you turn this into something you can't undo."

I deleted it.

Then I stopped.

Claire would have told me not to delete evidence.

I recovered it and forwarded it to Olivia.

That night, while warming a bottle, I noticed something tucked behind the coffee maker.

A small black device.

At first I thought it was a charger.

Then I saw the lens.

A camera.

Not mine.

I unplugged it without touching the memory card and called Olivia.

She told me to photograph it in place and contact police.

Officer Brandon Lee arrived forty minutes later.

He bagged the device and asked who had access to the home.

"My mother," I said. "Until last night."

He looked toward the stairs.

"Anywhere else we should check?"

We searched the living room, kitchen, nursery, guest room, and hallway.

Behind a row of books in Claire's office, we found a second camera.

Then a third in the nursery.

Officer Lee stared at it.

"This one has audio."

My mouth went dry.

"Can you find out who installed them?"

He nodded.

"Maybe. But there's something you should see first."

He pointed to the nursery camera.

A tiny green light was still blinking.

Someone was watching us live.
