Chapter 4 - The Photographs

I didn't sleep.

Diane left at 10:14 p.m. after I changed the door code in front of her. She stood on the porch in the cold and told me I was making the worst decision of my life.

Maybe I was.

But by midnight I had backed up every message on her phone that I could capture before she remotely locked the account.

At 2:06 a.m., I found the photographs.

Not on her phone.

In my own cloud storage.

Diane had used my tablet weeks earlier and accidentally synced an album.

The first photo showed dirty bottles across the kitchen counter.

Except I remembered that night. I had sterilized those bottles before bed.

The second showed prescription pills scattered beside Noah's changing pad.

They were Claire's postpartum medications, sealed and packed in a bathroom drawer after she died.

I zoomed in.

The bottle cap was off.

My stomach turned.

The third showed Noah lying in his bassinet with a blanket bunched dangerously near his face.

I had never put a loose blanket in his bassinet.

Never.

I called my sister, Rachel.

She answered on the fourth ring.

"Evan? Is Noah okay?"

"Did Mom ever talk to you about taking custody?"

Silence.

"Rachel."

"She said you needed help."

"Did she say custody?"

"Temporary."

I closed my eyes.

"How long have you known?"

"A week."

I almost hung up.

Then Rachel said, "Evan, there is something else."

"What?"

"Mom asked me to write a statement."

"About what?"

"That you were drinking again."

I stopped breathing.

I had been sober for six years.

"Did you?"

"No."

"Did anyone?"

Her voice dropped.

"Uncle Thomas did."

Thomas Mercer. My mother's older brother. The man who had spent every family holiday calling Claire controlling because she refused to let him smoke around the baby shower guests.

"Why would Thomas help her?"

Rachel whispered, "Because Mom promised him something if she gets Noah."

"What?"

"Claire's trust."

I sat up.

May you like

I didn't know Claire had left a trust.
