Chapter 8 - The Money Before Claire

Diane refused to explain.
She left Rachel's apartment without another word.
That afternoon, Olivia helped me trace the trust assets.
The largest block came from shares Claire had inherited from her maternal grandfather, Henry Vale.
But a smaller portion came from something stranger.
A legal settlement paid fifteen years earlier by Mercer Development Group.
My family's company.
I had left Mercer Development in my twenties because I hated working under Thomas and Diane. I knew Claire's family had once sued the company over a property deal.
I had never known the case ended with a settlement.
Olivia found the archived complaint.
Mercer Development had been accused of using forged signatures to force the sale of a commercial property owned by Claire's grandfather.
The executive who authorized the documents was Thomas Mercer.
The compliance officer who notarized them was Diane Mercer.
My mother.
"Claire knew this?" I asked.
"She discovered it after you married."
I felt the room tilt.
"So my mother thought Claire's money belonged to our family because part of it came from a settlement she helped cause."
Olivia nodded carefully. "That would explain resentment. It doesn't prove motive."
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice said, "Mr. Mercer, this is Child Protective Services. We received a report concerning your infant son."
I closed my eyes.
Of course we had.
Two hours later, a caseworker named Janine Cole stood in my living room.
She was professional, calm, and observant. She inspected the nursery, refrigerator, bottles, smoke detectors, medicine storage, and sleeping space.
Everything was safe.
Then she showed me the complaint.
Anonymous caller.
Alleged intoxication.
Unsafe sleep environment.
Medication accessible near infant.
Violent outburst witnessed by family.
All of it matched the staged photographs.
Janine looked at Noah asleep in my arms.
"Mr. Mercer, I need to ask one more question."
"Go ahead."
"Do you know a man named Martin Keller?"
"Yes."
Her expression changed.

"Because he called our office before the anonymous report was filed."
