Chapter 16 - Uncle Thomas Talks

Thomas chose a public diner off Interstate 84.
Officer Lee wanted me wired.
I agreed.
Thomas arrived twenty minutes late wearing a baseball cap and a coat too heavy for the weather. He looked exhausted.
"You brought cops?" he asked before sitting.
"I brought common sense."
He gave a humorless laugh.
"Claire always liked you better when you were angry. Said it made you less polite."
"Don't talk about her like you knew her."
His smile disappeared.
I pushed a copy of the bank transfer across the table.
"Why did Mom send you two hundred and fifty thousand dollars after the settlement?"
Thomas stared at it.
"To keep me quiet."
"About what?"
"The forged property signatures were my idea. But Diane notarized them. When the Vale family threatened criminal charges, she panicked."
"So you stole from the settlement?"
"We moved money."
"That's a yes."
He leaned closer.
"Your mother has spent fifteen years believing the Vales destroyed her life. Claire marrying you made it worse. Then Claire had a child and put millions into a trust Diane might control if you failed."
My jaw tightened.
"And you agreed to help."
"For money. Yes. I'm not going to insult you with a noble excuse."
At least one Mercer could say the ugly thing plainly.
"Why break into my house?"
"Diane told me Claire had copies of the old transfers. I wanted them before police found them."
"Did you find them?"
"No."
I didn't tell him we had.
"Why are you talking now?"
He rubbed both hands over his face.
"Because Keller went off-plan."
"How?"
"He filed papers Diane never approved. He wants to challenge the trust itself. He says Claire's paternity gives him standing to question how the assets were transferred."
Olivia had said the theory was weak, but weak claims could still create chaos.
Thomas leaned closer.
"And Diane has proof that could destroy him."
"What proof?"
"A recording of Keller admitting he coached her to stage the neglect photos."
"Where?"
Thomas looked toward the window.
"In a safe-deposit box."
"Which bank?"
He swallowed.

"The problem is, Diane disappeared this morning."
