Chapter 2 - The Man Outside the Door

Adrian did not open the door.

He moved Emily and Noah behind the marble kitchen island first.

Victoria watched him with the expression she used during hostile board meetings: patient, unimpressed, already counting votes.

"This is absurd," she said.

The pounding came again.

"Mrs. Cole! My name is Daniel Ruiz. St. Catherine's Records Department. I need to speak with Emily Carter Cole."

Emily's fingers locked around the blanket.

"I know that voice."

Adrian glanced at her.

"From the hospital?"

She nodded.

Victoria's gaze flicked toward the elevator control panel.

Adrian saw it.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Touch anything."

For the first time, Victoria's mouth tightened.

Sophie stood near the entry table, trembling so badly that her phone clicked against a bracelet on her wrist.

Adrian crossed to the door and opened it four inches with the chain still engaged.

A man in his forties stood outside wearing a navy hospital jacket over green scrubs. Rain darkened his shoulders. He held a manila envelope under one arm.

Behind him stood the building's night manager, confused and uncomfortable.

"Mr. Cole?" the man asked.

"Who are you?"

"Daniel Ruiz. Medical records compliance. I tried calling your wife, but her phone is disconnected."

Victoria said from behind Adrian, "He has no business here."

Daniel's eyes moved past Adrian toward her.

His face changed.

"Actually, Mrs. Cole, you are exactly why I'm here."

Adrian unhooked the chain.

Victoria stepped forward. "Adrian, this stranger should leave."

"You don't get to decide that anymore."

Daniel entered.

He looked at Emily on the floor and immediately took a step back, lowering his voice.

"Mrs. Cole, I'm sorry. I should have come sooner."

Emily did not answer.

Daniel opened the envelope.

"I was doing an audit of altered maternity discharge records. Your chart triggered three anomalies."

Adrian felt Victoria move behind him.

"What anomalies?"

Daniel pulled out photocopies.

"A psychiatric consult was entered at 2:17 a.m. the night your son was born. It states your wife exhibited paranoid ideation, emotional instability, and refused to surrender the infant for routine observation."

Emily stared at him.

"That never happened."

"I know. The psychiatrist listed on the form wasn't in the building that night."

Adrian looked at Victoria.

She did not blink.

Daniel continued. "There is also a social-work referral recommending emergency family supervision after discharge. It has your signature, Mr. Cole."

"I signed nothing like that."

"I know. Your signature block was copied from the surgical consent form."

Adrian's stomach knotted.

"Who entered it?"

Daniel hesitated.

Victoria answered for him.

"A clerical error is not a conspiracy."

Daniel looked straight at her.

"The login used belonged to Dr. Marcus Vale."

Sophie covered her mouth.

Adrian noticed.

"You know that name?"

Sophie looked at her mother.

Victoria said, "Enough."

"Sophie."

She swallowed.

"He's the family physician."

Emily whispered, "He came into my room."

Adrian turned.

"When?"

"After midnight. You had gone downstairs because your father called."

"My father is dead."

Emily closed her eyes.

"That's what you told me."

The sentence hung in the room.

Adrian's scalp prickled.

He remembered the call that night. The display had shown PRIVATE NUMBER. A man had said there was a legal matter involving his late father's estate and insisted Adrian come to the hospital lobby to sign for a courier envelope.

No courier ever arrived.

He had been away from Emily for twenty-three minutes.

"Vale came in during that time?"

Emily nodded.

"He said you asked him to check me because I was exhausted. He gave me something through the IV. I remember Victoria standing by the bassinet. Then I remember waking up and Noah was gone."

Adrian stared at her.

"You told me he was in the nursery."

"That's what they told me when you came back."

Daniel took another paper from the envelope.

"There was no nursery transfer recorded for nineteen minutes."

Adrian felt the room tilt.

"Where was my son?"

No one answered.

Daniel reached into the envelope one last time.

"This is why I came personally."

He unfolded a printout from an access log.

"At 2:31 a.m., someone used a restricted elevator badge to take your child from maternity to the genetics laboratory on the third floor."

Adrian looked at Noah sleeping against Emily.

"Genetics?"

Daniel nodded.

"A blood sample was logged under a temporary specimen number. The ordering physician was Dr. Vale. The patient name was left blank."

Victoria finally moved.

"Daniel," she said softly. "You have a wife and two daughters, don't you?"

The room went still.

Daniel's face hardened.

"That threat is being recorded."

He tapped a pen clipped to his jacket.

Victoria smiled faintly.

"I was expressing concern."

Adrian stepped toward her.

"Why was Noah taken to genetics?"

"Ask your wife."

Emily made a sound of disbelief.

Victoria's eyes remained on Adrian.

"You think this is about me wanting Emily gone because she is middle-class? Because she embarrasses me at charity dinners? Grow up."

"Then tell me what it's about."

Victoria looked at the baby.

Her calm finally cracked.

"It's about your inheritance."

Adrian did not speak.

His grandfather's trust was worth more than seventy million dollars, but Adrian had never controlled it. Victoria had managed the family holdings since Adrian's father died in a boating accident twenty-one years earlier.

He had accepted that arrangement because he hated the money and the people around it.

Victoria continued.

"Your grandfather was paranoid about succession. He added a clause before he died. Control transfers from the trustee to the first legitimate grandchild of the male line when that child's paternity is medically established. Until the child turns eighteen, the father exercises the voting rights."

Adrian's mouth went dry.

"Meaning when Noah was born—"

"You became entitled to remove me as trustee."

Sophie whispered, "Mom."

Victoria ignored her.

"But only if Noah is legally recognized as yours."

Adrian understood the shape of it now.

"So you questioned his paternity."

"I verified it."

Emily flinched.

"You took blood from my baby without permission."

Victoria's voice sharpened.

"I protected this family from uncertainty."

Daniel said, "That's not the only sample that was run."

Victoria stopped.

Adrian turned to him.

Daniel removed one final sheet.

"The lab compared the newborn specimen against two adult DNA profiles already stored in the hospital's private executive program. One belonged to you."

Adrian felt his heartbeat in his throat.

"And the other?"

Daniel looked at Victoria.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

"A man named Thomas Cole."

Adrian laughed once because the alternative was to stop breathing.

"My father was Thomas Cole."

Daniel nodded.

"According to the hospital database, his DNA profile was uploaded eleven months ago."

The words landed slowly.

Emily stared at Adrian.

Sophie began crying again.

Adrian looked at his mother.

"My father died twenty-one years ago."

Victoria said nothing.

Daniel slid the lab sheet across the table.

At the bottom, beneath a series of marker comparisons, was a notation.

PATERNAL LINE CONSISTENT.

SAMPLE SOURCE: THOMAS COLE - LIVE COLLECTION.

Adrian's hands went numb.

"Live collection?"

Sophie whispered, "Adrian..."

He looked at her.

May you like

She wiped her face.

"Dad isn't dead."
