Chapter 7 - Infant B

The woman in scrubs vanished into midtown before police arrived.

Hotel security preserved the hallway footage. Her face was mostly hidden by a mask and cap, but one image captured a hospital badge clipped backward to her waistband.

Daniel recognized the stripe pattern.

"St. Catherine's temporary neonatal staff," he said.

Lena froze the frame.

"Can we identify her?"

"Maybe. If the roster hasn't been altered."

Emily sat on the edge of the bed with Noah asleep against her shoulder.

She had showered and changed, but exhaustion had settled into her bones. Her hands still shook when she thought no one was watching.

Adrian noticed anyway.

He knelt in front of her.

"We can go somewhere else."

"No more running tonight."

Her voice was quiet.

"I want to know who Infant B is."

The wristband the woman dropped lay inside a clear evidence bag.

NOAH COLE.

Same date of birth.

Same hospital number.

Different blood type.

Noah was O positive.

The second band said A negative.

Daniel called a former coworker in laboratory services. It took thirty minutes and a promise that no names would be used unless legally required.

When he hung up, his face had changed.

"There was an A-negative male infant born at St. Catherine's forty-three minutes after Noah."

Emily stopped rocking.

"Who?"

"Mother's name was Rachel Moreno."

Adrian asked, "Was the baby in the same unit?"

"Yes. Room 814. Two doors from you."

Lena opened her laptop.

"And what happened to him?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

"He was transferred to another hospital the next morning for respiratory complications."

Emily's fingers curled around Noah's blanket.

"Is he alive?"

"Yes."

Everyone exhaled.

Then Daniel added, "But his chart shows a blood sample collected at 2:28 a.m. under Emily's medical record."

Infant B.

The room went silent.

Adrian said, "Why use another baby's blood?"

Lena answered first.

"To create a false result."

Emily looked at her.

"A false paternity result."

Lena nodded.

Adrian felt anger move through him like heat.

Victoria had not merely wanted to test Noah.

She had prepared two chains of evidence: one true, one false.

If needed, she could produce a laboratory report showing Adrian was not the father.

That would keep the trust under her control and make Emily look deceptive at the same time.

"But why was Noah's real sample run against Thomas?" Emily asked.

Daniel turned back to the lab printout.

"Because Victoria needed to know which version served her. If Noah wasn't Adrian's, she could use the real result. If he was Adrian's, she had the substituted sample ready."

Sophie sat in a chair by the window, pale with disgust.

"She planned both outcomes."

Adrian looked at his sister.

"What else was in the safe?"

Sophie opened a messenger bag.

"Financial statements. A guardianship order for Dad. Copies of medical evaluations. And this."

She handed Lena a sealed envelope marked PERSONAL - V.C.

Inside was a draft petition requesting emergency temporary custody of Noah.

The allegations against Emily were already typed.

Postpartum psychosis.

Medication misuse.

Threats to flee with the child.

Unsafe living conditions.

Adrian laughed without humor.

"Unsafe living conditions. She shut off the heat herself."

Lena scanned the document.

"This was prepared three weeks before Noah was born."

Emily closed her eyes.

Three weeks before delivery.

Before the prescription bottles.

Before the fake messages.

Before anyone could plausibly know how she would behave postpartum.

The accusations had been written before the acts they supposedly described.

"That's good evidence," Lena said. "Very good."

A knock sounded at the suite door.

Everyone froze.

The guards outside called through first.

"Ms. Brooks? Police detective. Verified badge."

Lena opened the door after checking.

Detective Mara Chen entered with a partner.

She listened to the timeline without interrupting, then examined the duplicate wristband and custody petition.

"We can open criminal inquiries into medication tampering and fraudulent records," she said. "Kidnapping is harder unless we prove the infant was actually removed without authorization."

Emily said, "He was."

Detective Chen looked at her.

"You remember that?"

"Pieces."

"Tell me only what you're sure of."

Emily looked down at the hospital bracelet still lying on the desk.

"I remember waking up and the bassinet was empty. I heard a baby crying in the hallway. I tried to stand, but my legs wouldn't work."

Her breathing shortened.

Adrian touched her hand.

"Then what?"

"A nurse came in. Not Nurse Patel. Another one. She said Noah was having routine blood work."

Emily frowned.

"She had a tattoo on her wrist. A little black moth."

Daniel looked at the security image of the woman who tried to enter the hotel.

He zoomed in on her left wrist.

A black shape showed beneath the sleeve.

Moth wings.

Emily's face went white.

"That's her."

Detective Chen immediately called for the footage to be flagged.

Daniel searched his memory.

"Temporary neonatal nurse with a moth tattoo... I think her name is Kara Wynn."

He called his former coworker again.

This time he got an address.

Detective Chen and her partner left within minutes.

At 2:11 a.m., Chen called back.

Kara Wynn was not at home.

But the apartment had been abandoned quickly.

Inside, police found a hospital transport blanket, expired neonatal labels, two prepaid phones, and a photograph.

Chen texted it to Lena.

The photo showed Victoria, Dr. Vale, Kara Wynn, and Thomas Cole standing together in a private hospital room.

The timestamp was the night Noah was born.

On the wall behind them was a whiteboard.

Someone had written two specimen numbers.

One belonged to Noah.

The other belonged to Infant B.

But beneath both numbers, in thick black marker, was the same handwritten instruction:

HOLD UNTIL V.C. DECIDES.

Emily whispered, "Decides what?"

Sophie stared at the photo.

Then she pointed at Thomas.

"Look at Dad's hand."

He was holding a folded piece of paper toward the camera.

Lena enlarged the image.

The writing was blurred, but four words were legible.

THE BABY IS ADRIAN'S.

Adrian felt the blood drain from his face.

Thomas had known the truth that night.

May you like

Which meant Victoria's next move had never been about uncertainty.

It had been about manufacturing doubt anyway.
