Chapter 9 - Elias Ward

Adrian did not tell Emily he felt relieved when the possibility first landed.

Not because he wanted Thomas to be unrelated.

Because uncertainty was easier than betrayal.

If Thomas was not his biological father, perhaps there was some explanation for twenty-one years of absence that hurt less.

Then he hated himself for thinking it.

Emily seemed to read the conflict anyway.

"You don't have to decide how you feel today."

They were back at the hotel after court.

Noah slept in the bassinet between them.

Adrian sat on the carpet with his back against the bed, the same way he had found Emily two days earlier.

The symmetry was not lost on him.

"I keep trying to make one person innocent," he said. "First my mother. Then Sophie. Then my father. I keep waiting for someone to be simple."

Emily touched the hospital bracelet on the desk but did not pick it up.

"Maybe simple is what got us here."

Detective Chen called that evening.

Kara Wynn had provided the location of Dr. Marcus Vale's private storage office.

Police served a warrant.

Inside they found paper lab reports, encrypted drives, controlled-medication logs, and a locked fireproof case containing three DNA result envelopes.

One for Noah and Adrian.

One for Noah and Thomas.

One for Noah and Elias Ward.

The first confirmed Adrian as Noah's father.

The second supported Thomas as Adrian's biological father through lineage markers.

The third result was the surprise.

It did not show Elias as Adrian's father.

It showed something stranger.

Elias Ward and Thomas Cole were half-brothers.

Adrian stared at Chen across the precinct conference room.

"That's impossible."

"Maybe," she said. "Or the family history you know is incomplete."

Lena slid over a genealogy report attached to the lab work.

Charles Cole, Adrian's grandfather, had fathered Elias Ward before marrying Thomas's mother.

Elias had been raised under his mother's surname and kept out of the Cole family entirely.

Victoria, at nineteen, had somehow met and married him without knowing—or perhaps before knowing—he was connected to the Coles.

Years later, she married Thomas, Elias's half-brother.

Emily sat slowly.

"So either way, her first marriage threatened the trust."

Lena nodded.

"And it gave Elias a potential claim."

Adrian looked at the papers.

"Where is Elias now?"

Detective Chen's silence answered before her words did.

"We don't know."

Hargrove knew more.

When Lena confronted him with the DNA report, the old lawyer closed his eyes.

"I prayed that file had been destroyed."

Adrian's voice turned hard.

"Start talking."

Hargrove told them Elias Ward had returned shortly before Thomas's boating disappearance.

He demanded money and recognition as Charles Cole's eldest son.

Thomas, horrified by the secret, wanted to amend the trust voluntarily.

Victoria opposed him.

"Why?" Emily asked.

Hargrove looked at Adrian.

"Because recognizing Elias would reduce Thomas's branch of the estate and expose Victoria's invalid first marriage. She feared scandal, but more than that, she feared losing control."

"Did she hurt Elias?"

Hargrove hesitated too long.

Adrian stood.

"Did she?"

"I don't know."

"That is not the same answer as no."

Hargrove's irregular clock ticked.

Tick. Tick. Tick. Pause.

The old man whispered, "Elias disappeared the week after Thomas."

Emily's face tightened.

Two men gone.

One declared drowned and secretly institutionalized.

The other erased entirely.

"And my mother controlled the trust after both were gone," Adrian said.

Hargrove nodded.

A knock sounded at the townhouse door.

Lena immediately stood.

No one had told anyone they were there.

The knock came again.

Three slow taps.

Hargrove looked toward the hall.

His face drained of color.

"That's his knock."

Adrian froze.

"Whose?"

Hargrove did not answer.

He walked to the door with one hand on the wall.

Adrian followed.

When Hargrove opened it, an elderly man stood on the stoop wearing a dark coat and no hat despite the cold.

He had Thomas Cole's eyes.

But he was not Thomas.

He looked at Adrian for several seconds.

Then he said, "You have his mouth."

Adrian could not move.

The old man held out one hand.

"My name is Elias Ward."

Behind Adrian, Hargrove whispered a prayer.

Elias looked past him into the house.

"If Victoria knows Thomas was moved, you have less time than you think."

Adrian found his voice.

"Where is my father?"

May you like

Elias's expression broke.

"I was hoping you knew."
