Chapter 3 - The Dead Man's Blood

Adrian read the line three times.

LIVE COLLECTION.

The words did not change.

For twenty-one years, Thomas Cole had existed only in photographs: laughing beside a sailboat, holding Adrian on his shoulders, standing behind Victoria at black-tie galas with one hand resting lightly at her waist.

Adrian had been fourteen when police said his father's boat went down off Montauk during a storm. Wreckage was recovered. A body was not.

Victoria had closed the memorial with an empty bronze casket.

Now Sophie was telling him that Thomas had been alive all along.

"Where is he?"

Sophie looked at Victoria.

"I don't know."

"That's a lie."

"I swear. I only found out last year."

Victoria walked to the bar and poured herself water.

The domestic normality of the gesture made Adrian want to break the glass in her hand.

"You buried an empty casket," he said.

Victoria took one sip.

"Because your father chose to disappear."

"You told me he drowned."

"He did drown, in a sense."

Adrian took one step toward her.

Emily called his name softly.

He stopped.

Noah stirred inside the blanket.

That tiny movement brought him back into the room.

Daniel Ruiz placed the lab report on the counter. "Whatever happened twenty-one years ago, this sample means someone presented as Thomas Cole at St. Catherine's eleven months ago. Hospital executive profiles require in-person collection and identity verification."

Victoria said, "Or forged documents. You seem very excited by paperwork for a records clerk."

Daniel's jaw tightened. "My job is to notice when paperwork lies."

Adrian looked at Sophie.

"How did you find out?"

She unlocked her phone and opened a photo.

It showed Victoria standing outside a low brick building in Connecticut. Beside her was an older man in a navy cap. His hair was white. His shoulders were thinner than Adrian remembered.

But the face was unmistakable.

Thomas Cole.

Alive.

Adrian gripped the edge of the island.

"When was this taken?"

"Eleven months ago."

The same month as the DNA profile.

"Why were you there?"

"Mom asked me to drive her because her driver was sick. She made me wait in the car. I followed her inside after twenty minutes because she left her phone on the seat."

Sophie looked sick remembering it.

"Dad was there. He looked at me and said my name."

Adrian's throat tightened.

"What did Mom say?"

"That he had a neurological condition. That he was confused. That he'd been living under another name because he was dangerous when we were children."

Victoria set down the glass.

"Which is true."

Adrian turned on her.

"Then why take his DNA?"

Victoria did not answer.

Emily spoke from the floor.

"Because she needed to confirm something before Noah was born."

Everyone looked at her.

Emily's voice was weak, but her eyes had sharpened.

"That's why she was asking about family medical history during my pregnancy. She wasn't worried about genetic disease. She was checking the trust."

Victoria's lips pressed together.

Adrian knelt beside Emily.

"We need to get you and Noah out of here."

"Where?"

"Anywhere she doesn't control."

Victoria gave a short laugh.

"The building is owned through Cole Residential Holdings. Your cars are titled through family entities. Your private security contract was negotiated by my office. Where exactly do you plan to go that I cannot find you?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For finally saying it out loud."

Daniel held up his recorder pen.

Victoria's eyes flicked toward it.

A crack appeared in her composure.

Adrian moved quickly after that.

He called an old college friend who ran a boutique hotel downtown under his own name. He used a ride-share account Victoria did not know existed. He told the night manager to bring blankets and a portable heater while Emily packed only what Noah needed.

Sophie tried to help.

Emily would not let her touch the baby.

The rejection hit Sophie hard.

"I understand," she whispered.

Emily looked at her.

"Do you?"

Sophie lowered her eyes.

"No. Probably not."

Victoria watched the preparations from the sofa.

"You're overreacting."

Adrian nearly laughed.

"You forged messages, tampered with medication, manipulated hospital records, shut off the heat, seized my wife's phone, and took our child for unauthorized genetic testing."

"Allegedly."

"I watched you change the pills."

"You watched a corrupted video file for less than a minute."

Adrian stopped.

She was right about one thing. The file was gone.

Daniel had a recording of Victoria's threat, but not the kitchen footage.

Emily seemed to understand the same problem.

"I copied part of it."

Adrian turned.

"Where?"

She hesitated.

"I recorded the laptop screen with the nursery camera."

Victoria's face changed.

Emily looked at her.

"You took my phone. You forgot new mothers improvise."

The nursery monitor was a standalone unit with local storage.

Adrian went to retrieve it.

The camera sat above the crib, angled toward the rocking chair.

He removed the memory card.

Empty.

The slot had no card inside.

He returned to the living room.

"It's gone."

Emily stared at him.

"No. I put it there myself."

Sophie whispered, "Mom."

Victoria stood.

"I am leaving."

Adrian blocked the elevator.

"Not until I know where the card is."

"You cannot detain me in my own son's home."

"Then call the police."

Victoria looked at him for a long time.

Then she smiled.

"You still think this is about evidence."

She lifted her handbag and placed it on the table.

"It's about timing."

A phone inside the bag vibrated.

Not Victoria's.

Emily's.

Adrian opened the bag and found it beneath a silk scarf.

The screen showed nine missed calls from a number labeled ST. CATHERINE'S NICU.

Emily took the phone with shaking hands.

There was a voicemail.

She played it on speaker.

A woman's urgent voice filled the room.

"Mrs. Cole, this is Nurse Patel. I don't know if you remember me from delivery night. Please call me before anyone brings your baby back to St. Catherine's. There was a second infant wristband printed under your son's chart. I found it tonight."

Emily went still.

The voicemail continued.

"I think someone tried to switch his identity after birth."

Then the message cut off.

Adrian looked at Noah.

May you like

Victoria said nothing.

And for the first time, Adrian wondered whether the child Emily was holding had ever been the target at all.
