Chapter 14 - Verified by a Ghost

“Verified by whom?” Theo demanded over the speakerphone.
The lender's compliance officer sounded exhausted. “The file includes a video identity check.”
Mara went white. “I never did one.”
“We're treating your dispute seriously,” the officer replied. “But the account was approved under our existing procedures.”
Theo requested that they freeze enforcement and preserve the video, IP logs, and application history. He spoke carefully, as if each syllable was a brick in a wall.
After the call, Mara sat on the hood of my car and put her head in her hands.
“Are they going to believe me?” she asked.
“They have to examine the evidence,” I said. “You didn't sign anything.”
Dana crouched near us. “There may be another path. A contractor who worked for Bayline told me they used a face-swap service in a marketing demo. He thought it was a joke.”
I looked at her. “You're saying they fabricated a video of Mara?”
“I'm saying we should investigate whether that happened. Don't assume it yet.”
By afternoon, the compliance officer sent a secure preservation notice to Theo confirming that the disputed video would be reviewed by a specialist. No one promised a quick outcome.
We had enough evidence to fight, but not enough to breathe.
Then Rosa called. “Miss Claire? I need to tell you what I heard after you left.”
“Are you safe?”
“I am at my cousin's house. Mrs. Whitmore told me never to return.”
“You did the right thing calling for help.”
Rosa hesitated. “Mr. Walter was arguing with Mrs. Whitmore. He said, ‘There won't be any more signatures. I'm taking it to the authorities.’ She told him he was too late.”
“Did he leave?”
“Yes. But his car came back after midnight, and I never saw him get out.”
Mara kept returning to the counterfeit video, not because she doubted the technical findings but because she hated watching a stranger borrow her mannerisms. We turned the screen off.
I called Walter. Straight to voicemail.

The next call came from the hospital.
“Ms. Bennett? You're listed as an emergency contact for Walter Whitmore. He's been admitted after a serious fall.”
