Chapter 17 - The Cameras

Grant stood in our lobby beneath the wall display of families moving into their first apartments. A local camera crew faced him. He wore a dark suit, an expensive watch, and the injured expression of a man who believed every room should offer him sympathy.
“My wife is under tremendous strain,” he was saying. “I'm worried about her judgment and about the people depending on this organization.”
I wanted to run at him. Theo touched my arm.
“Don't give him the scene he came for,” he said.
We stepped forward together.
Grant turned. “Claire, thank God. I've been trying to reach you.”
“You reached me by threatening my best friend,” I said.
The camera operator shifted. Grant's smile faltered.
“This should be private,” he said.
“Then why did you bring reporters?”
Dana Reed appeared near the lobby doors with her own camera. “That's an excellent question.”
Grant pointed at her. “She's spreading lies.”
Dana didn't take the bait. “I've asked you for comment on Bayline 47 three times. Would you like to answer now?”
“I have nothing to say to you.”
“Then don't,” I replied.
I addressed the crew only long enough to state that Harborlight had reported suspected document fraud and that an independent review was underway. I didn't reveal private client information or pretend the case had been resolved.
Then I turned back to Grant. “Leave this building.”
For one second I saw the man from the breakfast room: eyes flat, mouth tight, anger waiting behind his teeth.
“You're making a mistake,” he said quietly.
“I'm making a choice.”
He left without touching me. It felt like a victory until Mara checked her phone.
“Claire, look.”
A donor I barely knew sent a short email after the edited clip appeared. It said, “I will wait for the facts.” I read it twice. The sentence didn't absolve me or accuse me. It simply made space for reality to exist. On a day when everyone seemed eager to decide who I was, that space mattered.
A video was spreading online. It showed me flipping the breakfast table. The clip began half a second after Grant had slapped me and ended before I made the phone call.
