Chapter 18 - The Missing Seconds

By evening my inbox had become a landfill of insults. Strangers called me violent, ungrateful, crazy. A few donors asked whether Harborlight was safe. One sponsor paused a pending grant until the facts were clearer.
I sat beside June on her couch and watched the short clip for the tenth time.
“Don't,” she said. “It's hurting you.”
“I keep hoping I'll find the part that explains everything.”
“The part before the recording starts?”
I nodded.
Rosa called again. “Miss Claire, I have something.”
She had taken out her phone in the kitchen during the confrontation, intending to document Grant's threats after he fired her. Her recording began before the slap and continued through the table flip and my call to Mara.
“I didn't know if I should send it,” she said. “It's private.”
“Please send the original to Theo securely. And thank you.”
The video showed the morning exactly as I'd lived it. Grant pushing the waiver. Me refusing. Evelyn urging him on. The slap. My stumble against the sideboard. The table. The phone call.
I felt sick watching it, but also strangely steadier. The truth had a sequence, and now there was proof of that sequence.
Theo advised against dumping the footage online immediately. He shared it with the investigators and preservation counsel, then worked with me on a short public statement that acknowledged the clip without turning the incident into a social-media trial.
Ruth called with better news. The board had voted unanimously to retain me during the independent review and to add temporary oversight of financial approvals.
I cried at that. Not because I'd won everything, but because a room full of people had looked at the evidence instead of the loudest man.
Just before midnight Theo sent one more message.
Rosa refused payment for the recording. “Pay the lawyer who can keep you safe,” she said. I told her she had already done more than enough. She replied that she only did what anyone should do. I wished that were true. I hoped, if I ever stood in a hallway while someone else was in danger, I would remember exactly how she had sounded when she dialed for help.
*The lender's specialist finished reviewing Mara's identity video. Call me when you're awake.*

I called immediately.
His first words were, “We know how they faked it.”
