Chapter 19 - The Face on the Screen

The disputed verification video lasted forty-seven seconds. The woman in it had Mara's face, Mara's voice, and the wrong habits.
“She blinks at the same interval every few seconds,” Theo explained. “The examiner found irregular edges around her hair and jaw. And the audio doesn't match the room acoustics.”
Mara watched the secure playback in silence. When it ended she touched her own cheek, as if making sure her face was still hers.
“They stole me,” she whispered.
Lena opened a separate report. “The account login came from a device tied to a Bayline contractor. The contractor's manager gave investigators purchase records for the software.”
The lender froze enforcement of the disputed guarantee pending its formal fraud investigation. It wasn't an instant clean bill of health, but it was enough to keep Mara's father from receiving a collection notice that week.
Mara hugged me so tightly we knocked over a stack of papers.
“Your dad?” I asked.
“I'll tell him tonight.”
Dana's next article connected Bayline 47 to Evelyn's trust, the fake consulting contracts, and the halted Harborlight collateral filing. She used verified records and clearly described what remained under investigation.
Grant posted a denial. Evelyn called it a smear campaign. Their lawyer said the family had done nothing unlawful.
Then Miles provided investigators with the originals of his own instructions from Evelyn, including an email ordering him to collect sample signatures and identification scans. Walter gave a recorded statement about the loans and the night of his fall, though he still could not confidently explain his injury.
I wasn't at the courthouse when search warrants were executed at the Bayline office. I learned about it from Theo's call as June and I unpacked groceries.
“They seized financial records and devices,” he said. “Nobody is declaring the case over, but the investigation has teeth now.”
I leaned against the counter. “And Grant?”
The judge's questions stayed with me afterward. Not because they were kind or unkind, but because they were specific. Dates. Documents. Authority. Proof.
Theo paused. “He wants to meet you. His attorney says he'll cooperate if you agree not to speak about the marriage.”

I laughed once, without humor.
Then Theo said, “There's one more thing. Grant has filed for an emergency order claiming you owe him control of Harborlight.”
