Chapter 1 - The First Slap

The slap cracked across the Christmas table before anyone could say grace.
Mara Hale's head snapped to the side. At thirty-five weeks pregnant, she couldn't even step back without bumping the heavy stainless-steel pot in her hands against a chair. Her cheek burned. Across from her, Evelyn Hale stood in navy velvet and pearls, her silver hair perfect, her hand still raised.
"You do not accuse me in my own house," Evelyn said.
Mara could hear the old clock ticking above the fireplace. Her husband, Daniel, sat frozen in his pale blue shirt. His father, Henry, held a spoon halfway to his mouth. Daniel's older sister, Claire, covered her lips with one hand.
"You took the Winter Fund money," Mara said. "My mother kept the receipts."
Evelyn glanced toward the little black camera near the doorway. It was so quick Mara almost missed it.
"Your mother was a thief. And you're unstable, just like she was."
Something inside Mara gave way. She tipped the pot. Thick yellow soup crashed over Evelyn's head, soaked her silver hair, and ran down her necklace. Evelyn shrieked. Mara set the pot down hard, caught the older woman by the back of her head, and shoved her face into the soup-slick plate on the table.
"Take it back!" Mara shouted. "Take back what you said about her!"
Daniel grabbed Mara's arms and pulled her away. "Mara, stop! You're hurting her!"
She spun and slapped him. The sound was smaller than Evelyn's slap, but the silence afterward was worse. Daniel stared at her. Mara stared at her own hand. She had crossed a line, and she knew it.
Evelyn rose slowly, soup dripping from her chin onto her ruined dress. No one moved to help her.
"Get out," Evelyn said softly.
Mara backed toward the door, one hand over her belly. The baby kicked, sharp and real, beneath the red fabric.

Then Evelyn smiled, and Mara understood that the evening had never been just a dinner.
"It's all on camera," Evelyn whispered. "By morning, the whole town will know what kind of mother you are."
