Chapter 17 - The Smallest Cry

The operating room was bright and cold. Mara stared at a ceiling tile and counted Tess's words from the other side of the curtain.
"You are here. She's here. One breath at a time."
Mara wanted to ask a hundred questions. Instead she whispered, "Please let her be loud."
A minute later, there was a thin, startled cry. It was not the enormous movie-theater wail Mara had imagined. It was small and fierce, like a bird refusing to give up its place in the sky.
"She's here," the doctor said. "Your daughter is here."
Mara sobbed so hard she could barely speak. The team let her see the baby's round face and tiny moving fingers before carrying her to the warmer for assessment. Born early and needing breathing support, the baby would spend time in the neonatal unit. The nurses explained each step.
Later, in recovery, Daniel stood outside the glass door. He hadn't tried to force his way in. When Mara nodded, Tess let him enter for a few minutes.
"She's beautiful," he said quietly. "They let me see her through the window."
"She's not a prize," Mara said. "Not for your mother. Not for the company. Not even for us. She's a person."
Daniel swallowed. "I know."
"You need to learn how to tell the truth when it costs you something. Not after you're caught. Before."
"I'm going to spend the rest of my life trying."
"You don't get to make that my job."
He nodded. Mara could see how badly he wanted forgiveness. She wasn't ready to give it, and for once she didn't apologize for that.
After he left, Claire came in wearing a sweater that still smelled faintly of smoke. She had brought a tiny knitted hat. Henry had asked whether Mara needed anything; Claire had told him the answer wasn't something he could buy.
"There is someone downstairs," Claire said. "A woman named Ruth Bell. She used to work with Elena. She saw your video."
"What does she want?"
Claire pulled out her phone. "She says your mother left a recording for you."
Mara stared at the screen. She had not heard Elena's voice since the funeral.
May you like
"A recording?"
Claire nodded. "Ruth says it explains why Elena stayed silent all those years."
