Chapter 3 - A Safe Home

"The baby's heartbeat looks good," the triage nurse told Mara. "Your blood pressure is up. We're going to watch you a little longer."

Mara let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. The room smelled of disinfectant, not pine garlands or roasted turkey. That alone felt like mercy.

Her best friend, Tess Walker, arrived wearing jeans and a winter coat over her hospital scrubs. She worked upstairs in pediatrics and had known Mara since college.

"You look like you walked out of a bad soap opera," Tess said, then saw the red mark on Mara's cheek. Her expression changed. "Who did that?"

"Evelyn."

"And the video?"

"It starts after she hit me. I threw soup. I shoved her. I slapped Daniel. I can say all three things out loud."

Tess pulled up a chair. "Good. That's where we start. With what really happened, not what they want everyone to believe."

A hospital social worker visited after the nurse noticed the bruise. Mara answered her questions truthfully. Yes, someone had struck her. Yes, she had struck people too. No, she did not feel safe returning to the Hale house. They discussed support, documentation, and a place she could stay. Nobody threatened to take her child away. The contrast with Grant's voicemail made her furious.

At two in the morning, the doctor cleared her to leave with instructions to return for pain, bleeding, or reduced movement. Tess insisted Mara spend the night at her apartment.

"What about Daniel?" Tess asked on the drive.

Mara looked through the windshield. "He grabbed me like I was the only dangerous person in that room."

"Maybe he panicked."

"Maybe. But he watched his mother hit me first."

When they reached Tess's building, a new text appeared from a blocked number. It contained a photo of the Hale dining room taken that afternoon. At Mara's place setting, a note in Evelyn's precise handwriting read: RED DRESS. SOUP AT HER END. CAMERA TO FACE TABLE.

Below the photo was one sentence.

She wanted you to lose control.

Mara zoomed in on the image. In the corner, a second instruction was barely visible: HAVE DANIEL READY.
