Chapter 16 - No One Comes In

The ride to the hospital felt longer than the drive away from the Christmas mansion. Tess kept both hands on the wheel and talked steadily, asking Mara about the baby's movements without letting fear leak into her voice.
In triage, a nurse fastened monitors around Mara's belly. For several seconds the room held only the rustle of paper and the hum of equipment. Then a fast, familiar heartbeat filled the air.
Mara began to cry. "That's her?"
"That's her," the nurse said. "We're going to keep watching."
The heartbeat was there, but Mara was having regular contractions, and the tracing worried the obstetric team. The doctor explained that they were checking how the baby handled each one. Mara asked careful questions and tried to hold on to every answer.
Daniel arrived while they were preparing another assessment. He stood in the doorway, not crossing it.
"Tess called me," he said. "I came as soon as I could."
"You can wait outside," Mara told him.
He nodded. "Okay."
A few minutes later, raised voices carried down the hall. Evelyn had arrived with Grant's replacement attorney, a woman in a gray suit holding a thick packet of papers. Evelyn's face was pale; her pearls had been replaced by a gold chain.
"I'm the grandmother," Evelyn told a nurse. "There are documented concerns about her stability."
The nurse's voice stayed calm. "This is a restricted patient area. The patient decides who may visit."
"You don't understand who I am."
Daniel stepped between his mother and the room. "They understand. You're leaving."
Evelyn stared at him. "You would choose her after what she did?"
"I'm choosing not to let you scare her while she's in labor. That should have been easy for me from the start."
Inside, another contraction tightened around Mara like a belt. The baby's heartbeat slowed, then recovered. The doctor came back with two nurses and spoke plainly about the change they were seeing.
"We need to deliver your baby urgently," she said. "A C-section is the safest next step."
Mara looked at Tess, then at the closed door beyond which Daniel was waiting.

"Tell him she's coming," she whispered.
The doctor reached for Mara's hand. "We're going now."
