Chapter 14 - The Door We Didn't Open

"Where are you?" I asked.

Brooke was crying, real choking sobs that sounded nothing like her usual tears during an argument.

"He thinks I talked to Mom. He's furious."

"Call the police," Ethan said beside me.

"He checks my phone," Brooke whispered. "I borrowed this one."

"Tell us where you are. We'll send help," I said.

She named a gas station near the highway. Ethan immediately called Detective Park on his own phone. I stayed with Brooke, listening to traffic hiss over wet pavement.

"Do you remember when we used to hide under Grandma's kitchen table?" she asked.

"I remember."

"You promised you'd always come get me."

My chest ached. "I was eleven, Brooke. I didn't understand the difference between rescuing someone and letting them hurt you."

She went quiet.

"You can still get help," I said. "And you still have to answer for what you did."

"I know."

A car horn sounded. She gasped and hung up.

The police found her forty minutes later inside the gas station, barefoot and shivering. Dylan had taken her car keys during an argument, she said. She agreed to give a statement and showed them messages about the fraudulent loans.

When Park called to say Brooke was safe, I cried harder than I had after the sneaker hit the floor. I had been terrified she would die, and furious that I still cared.

"She asked to come to your house," Park told us.

"She can't," I replied.

When the call ended, I stared at the hallway that led to the guest room. For years Brooke had used childhood promises as a rope she could pull whenever she wanted me near. That night I finally understood that a boundary wasn't abandonment. I could help get her to safety without unlocking my front door. I could hope she lived without agreeing to be the place where she hid from consequences.

"I understand. She has a safe place to stay tonight."

The next morning, a process server knocked on our door with court papers. Dylan wasn't the only one making demands.

Brooke was asking for a restraining order against Ethan.
