Chapter 9 - A Signature in the Kitchen

It took me a moment to understand the words. The refrigerator hummed. Water dripped from the kitchen faucet. Through the window, a neighbor pushed a stroller past Mom's rosebushes.
"You watched her sign my name?"
"She said it was a family loan. She promised she'd pay it back before the baby came."
"And you let her?"
"I was two months behind on payments. Dylan said the bank would foreclose."
"Did you know my credit would be ruined?"
Mom pressed her lips together. "Brooke said nobody would get hurt."
I had spent thirty years learning the shape of her excuses. They always began with a problem she hadn't caused and ended with damage someone else was expected to absorb.
"You need to tell the truth to the investigator," I said.
"I can't send my own daughter to jail."
"You have two daughters."
Her shoulders shook. For a second I thought she would apologize. Instead she whispered, "You're stronger than Brooke. You can survive this."
I stood, pushing my chair back carefully. "Being able to survive something doesn't mean I volunteered for it."
Outside, I called Ethan. My hands trembled so badly I had to put the phone on speaker.
"I told her I won't cover it up," I said.
"I'm proud of you. Where are you?"
"At my car."
"I'm coming to get you. Don't drive until you've settled down."
My phone screen dimmed as I waited for Ethan. I had often imagined a confrontation that would end with Mom finally saying the perfect words. Instead I'd gotten a confession and a threat, and I was sitting in a parking space counting my breaths. There was no music swelling behind the moment. There was only traffic on the road and the stubborn knowledge that I could no longer pretend nothing had changed.
A truck slowed at the curb. Its windows were tinted, but I recognized the dented rear fender from Dylan's old photographs. It stopped for a heartbeat and rolled forward.

I took a picture of the license plate.
Ten minutes later, a text arrived from an unknown number: YOUR MOM HAS MORE TO LOSE THAN A HOUSE.
