Chapter 11 - The Account That Wasn't There

The account belonged to Robert's closed repair shop, Mercer Home Works. Someone had used an old tax document to create a new business profile with the same name and a different mailing address.
The lender had flagged the application because the tax identification number didn't match the current records. No money had been released. Still, the attempt suggested that Brooke was not simply trying to sell my house. She was looking for every piece of information she could use to make the family appear wealthier or more secure than it was.
Detective Kim asked whether I had kept any of Robert's old shop records. I took her to the attic, where a metal box sat beneath a folded Christmas tree. It held invoices, employee thank-you cards, and a stack of canceled checks. On top was a photograph of Robert standing beside Evan, both of them covered in sawdust and grinning like fools.
"He wanted Evan to take over the shop," I said. "Evan didn't want the work. He wanted the feeling that his father had left him something."
"That distinction matters," Kim said. "It doesn't excuse fraud, but it may help us understand the pressure behind it."
The next day, Evan came to the house with Daniel present. He admitted he had helped Brooke assemble the loan packet. He had not seen the false deed until she showed it to him, but he had known I hadn't agreed to the transfer. He said he convinced himself that once I understood their debt, I would change my mind.
"You knew I was under no obligation to pay it," I said.
"I know that now."
"You knew it then. You just didn't want to face what it meant."
He looked down. "Yes."
Detective Kim asked him to provide his phone and authorize access to the messages between him and Brooke. He hesitated, then handed it over. He said there were conversations he wished he could erase, but he wouldn't erase them.
As he signed the consent form, his phone lit up on the table. A message preview appeared from Brooke: DON'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE OFFICE PHONE.
Detective Kim photographed the screen before the notification disappeared.

She looked at Evan. "What office phone?"
He went white.
