Chapter 9 - A Family Story Turns Against Me

By Sunday, Brooke had told her version to everyone we knew. My sister asked whether I had been forgetting appointments, a cousin sent me an article about older adults living alone, and a neighbor suggested a smaller place. Nobody asked why a woman who had paid her bills on time for decades suddenly needed to surrender her home.
Brooke's story was easier to repeat: June was getting confused, Evan was trying to help, and the family had been forced to make a difficult decision. She made herself sound patient and exhausted. She made me sound stubborn and ungrateful.
I logged the calls for Daniel. He warned me not to fight rumors with rumors; the records would matter more.
My next-door neighbor, Celia Brooks, brought chicken soup and listened at my kitchen table. After thirty years as a school counselor, she could hear what people meant beneath their words.
"You don't have to convince everybody," she told me. "You have to protect yourself and let the truth catch up."
She also showed me a message Brooke had sent to a neighborhood group, suggesting that people check on me because I had become "unpredictable." Celia had refused to forward it. Instead, she sent the message to Daniel.
That afternoon, Sophie left a voice mail. She didn't mention the house. She told me she had made a paper chain for school and asked whether I still had the box of colored buttons Robert used to keep in his workshop. Her voice sounded ordinary until she whispered, "I miss you."
I listened twice, then put the phone down and cried in the pantry where no one could see me.
Later, Detective Kim called. The investigator had traced the false notary stamp to a digital template. The real notary had died, and no legitimate record showed that she had witnessed my signature. The alleged witness from Brooke's old business was refusing to speak to police.
"We may need a court order to get her records," Detective Kim said. "This won't be resolved overnight."
I said I understood, though the truth was moving far too slowly for me.
That evening, an email arrived from the title company. The scheduled walk-through had been canceled, but the buyer had requested a new date. The buyer's company was listed as BPR Holdings LLC.
