Chapter 5 - The Price of Keeping a Secret

Robert's letter was dated three months before he died, after Evan asked to borrow against the house to expand his contracting business. Robert refused, and the argument lasted two days.

Robert explained that the trust was meant to secure my home for life, while allowing Evan to inherit later—not at the cost of turning my old age into a negotiation.

"If he asks you to sign anything while you are grieving or frightened," Robert had written, "tell him to bring it to Daniel. If he loves you, he can wait for the truth."

Robert had known his son could confuse need with entitlement. He had not known how far it might go.

Detective Kim called before noon. The lender had confirmed that the application was submitted through a broker account connected to Brooke's staging business. The bank had frozen the application and preserved the records. No money had been released, but a second document had been uploaded: a supposed authorization from me allowing Brooke to communicate with the lender on my behalf.

I had never authorized her to do that.

"Can you prove the letter is old?" Detective Kim asked.

"Robert's handwriting is on every page. Daniel can compare it with the trust records."

"Good. Keep it somewhere safe."

I put the letter in a sleeve and drove it to Daniel's office. On the way home, I stopped at the pharmacy for my eye drops. When I returned, the back door was unlocked.

I knew I had locked it. Robert had installed the dead bolt after a shed theft years ago, and I used it every day.

The kitchen drawers were open. The office chair had been pushed against the desk. The empty space where the trust binder had been was now surrounded by loose papers.

Nothing obvious was missing. That was what made the room feel wrong.

My phone buzzed. A motion alert from the doorbell camera showed a figure in a dark coat entering through the side gate forty minutes earlier. The face was partly hidden by a scarf, but the person moved with a familiar impatience, turning the latch before checking whether anyone was watching.

I replayed the clip twice.

Then I noticed the silver bracelet on the person's wrist.

Brooke wore it every day.

I called Detective Kim. She told me not to approach Brooke and asked me to save the video in two places. While I was doing that, another message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Robert's letter—the very letter I had just delivered to Daniel.

Beneath it were six words: YOUR HUSBAND PROMISED US THE HOUSE.
