Chapter 18 - A Father's Choice

Evan brought Sophie to the garden on Saturday. She ran to me with her paper chain around one wrist.

"I thought you were going away," she whispered.

"I'm right here."

We fed ducks and counted red leaves while she told me about school and the class hamster. When she asked whether her parents were in trouble, I said the adults were handling something serious and none of it was her fault.

Evan stood a few steps away, giving us space. After Sophie went to the playground, he sat beside me.

"I moved out," he said. "I'm staying with a friend until I can find an apartment. Brooke says I'm betraying her."

"You are finally telling the truth about what happened. She may call that betrayal."

He nodded. "I should have stopped her. I should have called you the first time she asked for your ID."

"Yes."

He looked surprised. Regret was a beginning, not a receipt proving the debt had been paid.

"My lawyer says I may still face consequences," he said. "I'm not asking you to fix it. I just wanted you to know I won't blame you if I do."

That was the first apology I could hear without needing to correct it.

The prosecutor later offered him a chance to cooperate fully and accept responsibility for his role. Evan agreed. He would plead to a lesser charge connected to the fraudulent filing, repay the costs he had caused, and complete community service. The agreement did not erase the harm, but it spared the court a trial about facts he had finally admitted.

Brooke rejected the first offer. She continued to insist that Evan had planned everything and that she had merely followed his instructions. The prosecutor told Daniel they were preparing for trial.

I thought of the woman on my porch, the one who had announced that I was confused and ordered me out of my own home. I wondered whether she had ever believed her own story, or whether she had simply repeated it until it became easier than the truth.

A week later, Detective Kim called with a final piece of evidence: the original office computer had been recovered from storage, and its deleted files included the first draft of the deed.

The file properties showed who had created it.

Brooke had used her own name.
