Chapter 14 - The Recording

We listened to the recording in Daniel's conference room. I kept my hands flat on the table so I wouldn't reach for the phone and shut it off.

Brooke talked about the lender, title company, and a buyer who would pay if the deed cleared. Evan asked whether they could sell without my signature. She said the trust was "just paperwork" and nobody would check unless I made a fuss.

Then Evan said the sentence I would remember for the rest of my life.

"If she finds out, I'll tell her I thought it was a refinance."

Brooke laughed once. "That's your story, then."

The recording didn't prove Evan had forged the deed, but it proved he knew the plan was dishonest before he came to my door. He had not simply been fooled. He had chosen a story that would protect him if the lie failed.

The room seemed to tip. Daniel reached for the playback button, but I shook my head.

"I heard enough."

Detective Kim explained that the recording would need authentication before it could be used in court. She also said Evan's cooperation could matter, but it would not erase his choices. The prosecutor would decide what charges, if any, were appropriate after reviewing the full evidence.

"What happens to Sophie?" I asked.

"She's not responsible for this," Kim said. "We'll make sure any interviews are handled appropriately."

That afternoon, Evan came to my house with his own attorney. He stood on the porch and asked if I would let him in. I made him wait while I called Daniel. Then I opened the door, leaving the chain on.

"I heard the recording," I said.

He shut his eyes. "I know."

"You knew it was wrong before you came here."

"Yes."

"You let her tell me I was confused. You watched her threaten to change the locks. You let me think I had somehow failed you as a mother."

His eyes filled, but I wouldn't let his tears become another thing I had to manage.

"I was afraid," he said. "I thought I could fix it after the debt was paid."

"You don't get to borrow my home, my name, and my dignity to buy yourself more time."

He nodded. "I know. I'm going to tell the prosecutor everything."

Before he left, he placed a small envelope on the porch. Inside was a key to the house and a note in his handwriting: I don't deserve to have this. I wanted you to know I understand that now.

I closed the door and leaned against it until my knees stopped trembling.

Then Detective Kim called again.

Brooke had retained a lawyer—and was claiming that Evan had planned the entire scheme.
