Chapter 10 - Bernard's Inheritance

Bernard Shaw laughed.

It was quiet, almost weary.

"Adrian, you really do mistake inference for intelligence."

Adrian stood.

"Then explain the ring."

Bernard looked at Isabella instead.

"Your mother gave it to me."

"When?"

"Three days before she died."

Luca pushed away from the window.

"You never told Giuseppe."

"Giuseppe was the reason she gave it to me."

The room went silent.

Isabella could hear water dripping from her hair onto the carpet.

"My mother trusted you?"

Bernard's expression softened.

"Once."

The word carried history Isabella did not want.

"Were you having an affair with her?"

Luca closed his eyes.

Adrian looked down.

Sabrina stopped holding the ice to her lip.

Bernard did not answer.

Isabella felt her stomach twist.

"Were you?"

"For six months," he said.

The room seemed to move half an inch sideways.

Isabella gripped the table.

"Before she died?"

"Yes."

Luca swore softly.

"Giuseppe never knew?"

Bernard looked at him.

"Giuseppe knew everything eventually."

"Did he kill her?" Isabella asked.

Bernard flinched.

Tiny. Real.

"No."

"Did you?"

"No."

"Then who replaced her medication?"

Bernard removed his glasses.

"Elena did."

Isabella stared.

"What?"

"She had a clotting disorder she concealed from Giuseppe. The anticoagulant was prescribed under another physician's care. She doubled the dosage herself after a long flight. The second laboratory found a dangerous concentration, yes, but no one could prove whether it was accidental or intentional."

"Intentional?"

"She was terrified Giuseppe would discover the trust, the affair, the debt she had documented. She was not sleeping. She was making decisions quickly."

Isabella's hands shook.

"You're suggesting my mother killed herself."

"I am saying the evidence never proved murder. Your father preferred murder because murder gave him an enemy."

Luca stepped close to Bernard.

"You buried the second test."

"I buried nothing. Giuseppe did."

"On your advice."

"Yes. Because a public scandal would have destroyed Elena's reputation and triggered cross-defaults on the hotels."

Isabella stared at the ring.

Her mother's initials gleamed inside the band.

"And the fallback trust?"

Bernard's eyes dropped to it.

"Giuseppe created it years later. He used Elena's ring as the identity token because he knew I had it."

Adrian laughed sharply.

"So he named you."

"No."

"You have the token."

"Possession is only one condition. Biometric confirmation is another."

Sabrina leaned forward.

"Biometric confirmation of whom?"

Bernard looked at Isabella.

"Elena's closest surviving blood relative outside Giuseppe's line."

Everyone turned toward Luca.

He shook his head.

"No. Elena was not my sister."

"Not you," Bernard said.

Isabella felt a cold pressure behind her ribs.

"Who?"

Bernard looked toward Sabrina.

Sabrina stopped breathing.

"No," she said.

Bernard's voice was almost gentle.

"Your mother was Elena's half sister."

Sabrina stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

"You're lying."

"Ask the Geneva registry. Ask why your first compliance assignment was Isabella Moretti. Ask why I chose you out of thirty analysts."

Sabrina's face drained.

Isabella looked from Bernard to Sabrina.

"You're my cousin?"

"I didn't know."

"Did Adrian?"

Adrian's silence answered.

Sabrina turned on him.

"You knew?"

He rubbed his burned wrist.

"I found the file last year."

"And you didn't tell me."

"You were already too involved."

"With you?"

"With all of it."

Sabrina slapped him.

Adrian took the hit without moving.

Isabella watched, oddly detached.

The night had become too crowded for fresh betrayals.

Bernard righted Sabrina's chair.

"Giuseppe discovered the blood relationship while reconstructing Elena's trust. He built the fallback arrangement so neither Luca nor I could control the assets alone. The ring required Sabrina's biometric verification."

"Why Sabrina?" Isabella asked.

"Because Giuseppe did not trust men who wanted the Moretti name."

Adrian smiled bitterly.

"He still controlled his daughter from the grave."

Isabella looked at the sealed envelope marked AFTER EVERYTHING ELSE.

She opened it.

Inside was a single page in her father's handwriting.

BELLA - IF YOU HAVE REACHED THIS LETTER, THEN EVERYONE HAS TOLD YOU A VERSION THAT MAKES THEM NECESSARY.

Her throat tightened.

She kept reading.

THE FALLBACK TRUST IS NOT AN INHERITANCE. IT IS A TRAP.

Isabella looked up.

Luca moved closer.

She did.

THE PERSON WHO TRIES TO ACTIVATE IT WITHOUT YOU IS THE PERSON WHO HAS BEEN MOVING THE MONEY.

The room became very quiet.

Isabella looked at the documents again.

Adrian had tried to shift control.

Bernard had the ring.

Sabrina had the biometric key.

Luca had the hidden archive.

But none of them could activate the trust alone.

Unless one had collected the others' pieces.

Isabella's eyes moved to the green-room folder Adrian still carried.

"Open it," she said.

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

"The papers you planned to put in front of me tonight. Open them."

He did.

Isabella took the stack and flipped to the signature tabs.

At the back was a page she had not seen before.

CONTINGENT VOTING TRUST - CONSENT TO ACTIVATION.

Her forged signature was already on it.

Below hers was Sabrina's digital verification code.

And beneath that, in blue ink, Bernard Shaw's signature.

Luca stared at the page.

"Who assembled this?"

Adrian looked at Bernard.

Bernard looked at Adrian.

Then Sabrina whispered, "Neither of them."

She pointed to the document footer.

A printer ID appeared in tiny gray type.

MV-EXEC-02.

Isabella knew the code.

It belonged to the executive office on the top floor of the Moretti Hotel.

An office that had been locked since her father's death.

A printer that should not have been connected to anything.

Then Isabella's phone rang.

Isabella studied the consent again. The forged signature looked perfect until she noticed the slant of the final "a" in Moretti. It came from a condolence acknowledgment she had signed while half sedated after her father's funeral.

She remembered Bernard standing beside her desk that week, sorting stacks into neat piles.

Sign these now, Bella. The rest can wait.

A gentle voice. A glass of water. A pen placed precisely between her fingers.

She looked at him.

"You harvested my signature while I was grieving."

Bernard did not defend himself.

Adrian did.

"I didn't know where the specimen came from."

"You used it anyway."

"Yes."

The bluntness landed harder than excuses.

Sabrina stared at the digital verification line beneath Isabella's name.

"And you used my token without telling me."

Adrian looked at her.

"Yes."

May you like

No one in the room had enough innocence left to sound shocked.

Caller ID: GIUSEPPE MORETTI.
