Chapter 7 - The Empty Beneficiary

Bernard held the perfume bottle between two fingers as if it were evidence already bagged.
"You left the safe open," he said.
Isabella knew she had not.
"Hotel security gave you access?"
"I have had access to this hotel longer than you have had a driver's license."
Luca shifted his weight.
Bernard noticed.
"Still choosing exits, Luca?"
"Still choosing other people's money, Bernard?"
Bernard smiled.
"You always did mistake cynicism for intelligence."
Adrian's voice came again through the ballroom speakers.
"Isabella?"
The audience laughed politely, unsure whether his invitation was part of the program.
Bernard extended his free hand.
"Give me Sabrina's card."
Sabrina stiffened.
"How do you know -"
"Because you were never as invisible as you believed."
Isabella looked at the black-iris bottle.
"What is in that one?"
Bernard's thumb moved across the scratched silver collar.
Her father's bottle.
"Sentiment. Mostly."
"Then why steal it?"
"Because you assign meaning to objects when facts frighten you. Your father did the same."
Isabella took one step forward.
"Did you kill my mother?"
Bernard's expression barely shifted.
"No."
A direct denial at last.
Too late to comfort her.
"Did you kill my father?"
"No."
"Did Adrian?"
Bernard looked toward the ballroom.
"Your husband has many defects. Patience is not one of them."
"That wasn't an answer."
"No."
Luca exhaled sharply.
"He learned from judges."
Bernard's eyes moved to him.
"Tell Isabella why her mother named you in a secret trust."
Luca went rigid.
"You tell her. You drafted it."
Bernard tilted his head.
"I revised it. Elena drafted the first instructions herself. She feared Giuseppe would consolidate every family asset into one operating company. She feared debt. She feared leverage. Most of all, she feared that once Isabella inherited, men would marry proximity to the balance sheet."
Isabella felt the words like small blows.
Adrian had once joked that he married her for her terrible coffee.
She had loved the joke.
"My mother named Luca to control the hotel shares if she died suspiciously."
"Correct."
"So why didn't the trust activate?"
Bernard smiled faintly.
"Because her death was not ruled suspicious."
Luca's hands curled.
"Because the second toxicology result vanished."
"Chain of custody matters."
"To murderers and lawyers."
"Often the same people hire me."
The line was meant to be clever.
It made Isabella suddenly certain Bernard was scared.
He was filling silence.
"And the fallback beneficiary?" she asked.
That stopped him.
Only for a breath.
But she saw it.
"What fallback beneficiary?"
Sabrina laughed softly.
"There."
Bernard's gaze hardened.
Isabella held out her hand.
"Give me the perfume bottle."
"No."
"It belongs to me."
"Property ownership is one of the matters currently under dispute."
"Not perfume."
"You would be surprised what appears on an inventory."
Luca moved.
Not toward Bernard.
Toward the fire alarm.
He pulled it.
A bell exploded through the corridor.
Sprinkler doors released above them but did not activate. In the ballroom, music stopped and guests began shouting.
Bernard flinched.
Isabella snatched the bottle from his hand.
Sabrina shoved open the kitchen door.
"Now."
They moved with the confusion.
Hotel staff began directing guests toward exits. Adrian left the stage, furious, still clutching the presentation folder.
Isabella walked directly toward him.
For one heartbeat he seemed relieved to see her.
Then he saw Luca and Sabrina behind her.
"What are you doing?"
"Evacuating."
"This is a false alarm."
"Then everyone will be back in ten minutes."
Adrian reached for her clutch.
She pivoted away.
"What did Sabrina give you?"
"A reason to read more carefully."
"Bella, listen to me. Bernard is trying to protect you. Luca is using you. Sabrina has been lying to both of us."
"You slept with her."
Adrian glanced at the nearby guests.
"Keep your voice down."
"That concern feels nostalgic."
His face tightened.
"The trust is more complicated than you understand. Your father moved money offshore. He hid liabilities. If those records become public, the hotel group could lose financing by morning. Thousands of employees could be affected."
For the first time, he had said something that sounded possible.
Isabella hated him for it.
"So you stole eighteen million dollars to save housekeepers?"
"I moved assets to protect liquidity."
"Into companies you own."
"Temporarily."
"You also prepared a petition calling me unstable."
Adrian's jaw worked.
"Because you were grieving and refusing to look at the numbers."
"You forged my signature."
"Your signatures were authorized specimens."
The legal phrasing made her skin crawl.
Behind him, Bernard was speaking urgently into a phone.
Sabrina touched Isabella's elbow.
"We need to go."
Isabella held up the perfume bottle.
Its cap had loosened during the struggle.
Something clicked inside.
She stopped.
"What?" Luca asked.
Isabella unscrewed the base instead of the cap.
The glass cylinder separated from a false bottom.
Inside lay a tiny brass capsule.
She opened it.
A tightly rolled strip of onion-skin paper slid into her palm.
Her father's handwriting ran down it in narrow lines.
Isabella read the first sentence.
Then read it again.
"What does it say?" Sabrina asked.
Isabella looked at Luca.
The older man's face had gone pale before she spoke.
"It says my mother's trust did activate."
Luca stared.
"That's impossible."
"No. It says the shares were transferred fourteen years ago."
She lowered the paper.
"To a beneficiary listed as deceased."
Luca took one step back.
Isabella read the final line aloud.
"Beneficiary accepted transfer in Geneva."
The note in Isabella's hand included transaction references her father had abbreviated in a code she remembered from childhood road trips. He used to make her solve license plates by turning letters into numbers.
She translated one sequence now.
17-05-ELENA.
Another line pointed to a Geneva custodian bank and a private registry entry.
Luca leaned close enough to read over her shoulder.
"That account was supposed to be dormant."
"Supposed to be?"
"After my funeral, Giuseppe told me the shares would sit behind a nominee until the danger passed. I never had direct signing authority."
Isabella pointed to the phrase BENEFICIARY ACCEPTED.
"This says someone acknowledged them in person."
Luca rubbed water from his forehead though the sprinklers had not started yet.
"Then either Giuseppe lied to me, or someone used my identity."
May you like
"Both options are becoming crowded."
The date was two weeks after Luca Moretti's funeral.
