Chapter 8 - The Dead Shareholder

Luca did not deny the date.
That was the worst part.
Around them, the ballroom emptied through open doors while the fire alarm kept ringing in sharp mechanical bursts.
Isabella folded the onion-skin note once.
"You inherited my mother's shares after she died."
"Not inherited. Held."
"Do not improve verbs."
Luca looked older than he had an hour earlier.
"Elena's trust activated because Giuseppe submitted the private toxicology report. Quietly. He did not challenge the official ruling. He used the trust's internal mechanism instead."
"And gave you control."
"Temporary control."
"While the world thought you were dead."
"That was the protection."
Isabella laughed once, without humor.
"Everyone protects me by lying to me."
Adrian had stopped trying to manage the evacuation. He stood ten feet away, listening.
Bernard did the same.
Luca saw them.
"Not here."
"No," Isabella said. "Here is perfect."
She turned to Adrian.
"Did you know Luca held my mother's hotel shares?"
Adrian's eyes flicked toward Bernard.
Answer enough.
"When did you find out?"
"After we were married."
"From the Black Iris file you bought in Geneva?"
Adrian's face changed.
Not guilt.
Recognition that someone else had told her more than he expected.
"Luca sold me incomplete records through a broker. I did not know they were stolen."
"And once you knew?"
"I understood why your father had spent years moving assets among entities no one could audit properly."
Luca stepped forward.
"Giuseppe was hiding ownership from Bernard."
"Giuseppe was hiding everything from everyone," Adrian snapped. "He leveraged hotels against construction debt and then buried guarantees in family companies. He created a maze and called it stewardship."
Isabella looked at Bernard.
"True?"
Bernard removed his glasses and cleaned them with a pocket square.
A delay.
"Your father was aggressive."
"True?"
"Yes. He concealed liabilities."
For the first time that night, Isabella felt the floor shift under a memory of her father rather than under the people betraying him.
Giuseppe Moretti had been charming, loud, controlling, generous, impossible.
He had also believed the family name could solve arithmetic.
"How much debt?"
Adrian answered.
"At its worst? Four hundred and twelve million."
Isabella's mouth went dry.
"That is impossible."
"It was refinanced. Partially paid down. Mostly hidden from you."
"Why?"
"Because your father knew you would sell assets to reduce leverage, and he refused to let you."
Luca's voice sharpened.
"Do not turn theft into fiduciary concern."
Adrian rounded on him.
"You sold me the map."
"And spent eight years trying to undo it."
"After the price went up."
Sabrina stepped between them.
"Stop."
All three men looked at her as if surprised she had a voice.
Sabrina pulled the flash card from Isabella's clutch and held it up.
"This contains the debt schedules, the shell-company transfers, and Bernard's instructions to create a medical narrative around Isabella. We don't need family mythology. We need a computer."
Isabella took the card back.
"Presentation booth."
They moved toward the rear stairs.
Bernard blocked the path.
"If you display confidential financial records to a ballroom full of donors, you will cause a run on the group's credit facilities. Adrian is right about that."
"So your solution was to steal the assets first?"
"My solution was to keep control concentrated until the debt could be unwound."
"In whom?"
Bernard looked at Adrian.
"Someone capable of making decisions without emotional attachment."
Isabella smiled.
"You mean someone who sleeps with the compliance officer."
Sabrina's face flushed.
Adrian looked away.
Bernard put his glasses back on.
"You can hate the method and still need the result."
"That sentence should be engraved over the entrance to hell."
The alarm stopped.
Silence fell.
Then the lights went out.
Emergency lamps glowed red along the walls.
Guests shouted in the lobby beyond.
Sabrina looked toward the ceiling.
"That isn't the fire system."
Luca swore.
"Server shutdown."
Adrian's face went blank.
Too blank.
Isabella turned on him.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
A phone vibrated in Bernard's hand.
He glanced at the screen and immediately locked it.
Isabella saw the message anyway.
PURGE INITIATED - 1706 / 04:00.
Four minutes.
Luca was already running.
"They're wiping the archive."
Isabella grabbed his sleeve.
"The files on the USB?"
"Copies. The originals include your father's recordings, the signed trust instruments, everything."
"Can we stop it?"
"From the room. Maybe."
They sprinted toward the service stairs.
Behind them Bernard shouted for security.
Sabrina stayed beside Isabella.
Adrian followed.
"Why are you coming?" Isabella demanded.
"Because if Bernard destroys that archive, he owns the story."
"You helped him write it."
"Then I know where the lies are."
They reached the seventeenth-floor service landing as the emergency lights flickered.
The hidden elevator would not respond.
Luca tore open the maintenance panel.
"Two minutes."
Isabella smelled iris and bergamot.
Not from the bottle.
From the ventilation shaft.
A thick chemical sweetness followed.
Luca froze.
"Back."
Smoke began curling under the black door of Room 1706.
Someone was not wiping the archive.
As they ran, Isabella's phone filled with alerts from the forensic accountant she had hired that morning. The three shell companies were moving money again - small test transfers, ten thousand dollars each, as if someone were checking which accounts remained unfrozen.
She showed the screen to Adrian.
"Yours?"
He shook his head.
"North Glass can't move without dual approval tonight."
"Whose second approval?"
Adrian looked at Bernard.
Bernard kept running.
"Mine," he said.
"Then stop them."
"My credentials were revoked twenty minutes ago."
Sabrina nearly stumbled.
"By whom?"
"Administrator account."
"Which administrator?"
Bernard did not answer.
Luca did.
"Giuseppe had one offline master credential for emergencies."
Isabella felt the hairs lift along her arms.
"My father is dead."
"Yes."
"Then somebody has his master key."
Adrian looked genuinely unsettled now. "The master credential could rewrite account permissions without touching the public network."
Sabrina stared at him. "And you never thought to mention that?"
"I thought Giuseppe destroyed it before he died."
Luca gave him a flat look. "You knew Giuseppe. He destroyed receipts, not leverage."
May you like
The corridor lights blinked once, then twice, as if the hotel itself had heard her.
Someone was burning it.
