Chapter 4 - Black Iris

The tape clicked off.

For a moment, the only sound in Room 1706 was the ventilation system dragging air through old ducts.

Isabella's mouth tasted metallic.

"My mother died of an aneurysm."

Luca did not answer.

"I was twenty-five. She collapsed at breakfast. I was there."

"I know."

"The hospital said -"

"Hospitals say what tests let them say."

Isabella crossed the room and struck him across the face.

The sound cracked through the archive.

Luca did not raise a hand.

A red mark formed along his cheek.

"You don't get to come back from the dead and turn my parents into a puzzle."

"You're right."

"Stop agreeing with me."

"Also fair."

She almost laughed. The impulse disgusted her.

Isabella turned away and gripped the edge of the desk until her knuckles blanched.

On the wall, photographs had been arranged in clusters connected by thin black string.

Adrian appeared in six of them.

Bernard appeared in eleven.

Sabrina appeared in only two.

One showed her leaving a private bank in Geneva.

The other showed her at lunch with Bernard Shaw.

A date was printed beneath it.

Six months before Sabrina met Isabella.

"She knew him first," Isabella said.

Luca nodded.

"Yes."

"You knew she was close to Bernard?"

"Eventually."

"And you let her become my friend."

"I did not control your guest list."

"You watched me."

"From a distance."

"That is not better."

Luca moved to the old server rack.

"Your father asked me to watch Adrian, not you. Adrian made that distinction impossible."

He powered on a terminal.

The screen took almost a minute to wake.

"The USB?"

Isabella removed it from her clutch.

"Encrypted."

"It should be."

"You planted the bag."

Luca looked over his shoulder.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

The admission was almost insulting in its simplicity.

"You put it beside my husband's bed while he was sleeping with my best friend."

"They were not sleeping."

Isabella stared.

Luca's eyebrow lifted.

"At that exact moment. You walked in very efficiently."

"How did you get into the penthouse?"

"Your father built half the building's security architecture. Adrian changed the codes, not the service locks. Men always replace technology before hinges."

Isabella plugged the USB into the server.

A password prompt appeared.

Luca placed the black-iris perfume bottle beside the keyboard.

"Smell it."

"I'm not in the mood for nostalgia."

"That is not perfume."

She unscrewed the cap.

Iris. Bergamot. Beneath it, the metallic note again.

Luca tapped the silver collar.

"Your father added one ingredient after my memorial."

"What?"

"Iron gall ink. A drop in each bottle. Enough to change the scent."

"Why?"

"Because smell survives fear better than numbers."

Isabella stared at him.

"That sounds like something he would say after two glasses of Barolo."

"He was on his third."

She looked at the password field.

"Black iris. Iron. Gall."

Her father had collected antique books. He loved marginal notes, old inks, tiny systems nobody else noticed.

She typed FERRONERO - black iron in his private shorthand - then stopped.

A memory surfaced.

Her father at his desk, correcting her Italian when she was ten.

Not black iron, bella. Iron black. Ferro nero. Order matters when you want to be understood.

She typed FERRONERO1706.

Access granted.

Folders filled the screen.

Trust transfers. Audio recordings. Scanned contracts. Medical files.

Isabella clicked the folder labeled ELENA M.

Her mother's name.

Inside was a scanned pathology report she had never seen.

A handwritten note covered the margin.

SECOND SAMPLE NOT MATCHING.

"What does this mean?"

"Your mother had a toxicology panel after she died," Luca said. "The first sample showed nothing unusual. Your father had a second vial tested privately in Switzerland."

Isabella scrolled.

The second report listed a concentration of a prescription anticoagulant far beyond therapeutic range.

Her hands began to shake.

"She wasn't prescribed this."

"No."

"Who had access?"

"Your mother took vitamins, blood pressure tablets, and one sleeping pill. Someone replaced the sleeping pills for weeks."

Isabella felt the room narrow.

"My father knew?"

"He suspected. He never proved who did it."

"Then why didn't he go to the police?"

"Because the laboratory courier disappeared. Because the family doctor recanted. Because Bernard advised him that a public accusation without chain of custody would destroy the hotel group's financing and hand control to creditors."

Isabella looked toward Bernard's photograph.

"Convenient advice."

"Your father thought so too. Eventually."

She opened another file.

A set of incorporation documents appeared for North Glass Holdings.

The registered agent was a Delaware service company. The beneficial ownership field was redacted.

But a buried audit note referenced a client code.

BS-71.

Bernard Shaw.

Isabella's pulse quickened.

"There."

Luca leaned closer.

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"Initials are not murder."

"They are theft."

"If the code is his."

Isabella opened more files.

A draft petition appeared: PETITION FOR TEMPORARY FIDUCIARY CONTROL - I. MORETTI COLE.

Her stomach turned.

The document described her as grieving, erratic, financially impulsive, and unable to distinguish personal suspicion from business judgment.

Adrian's sworn declaration was attached.

So was Bernard's legal memorandum supporting emergency review.

The date was tomorrow.

"They planned to file this after the gala."

"Yes."

"Why the gala?"

"Because Adrian needed your signature on three asset-management consents first. He intended to present them between speeches as donor authorizations."

Isabella remembered the folder waiting at her place setting downstairs.

White paper. Gold Moretti crest.

She had almost signed similar folders without reading them for years.

"I would have signed."

"Probably."

"Don't sound pleased."

"I'm not."

A red warning appeared on the server screen.

REMOTE SESSION REQUESTED.

Luca's expression changed.

"Unplug the USB."

Isabella reached for it.

The screen went black.

Then a live camera feed appeared.

Room 1706, viewed from the corner above them.

Someone was watching.

A speaker crackled overhead.

Bernard Shaw's voice came through, calm and intimate.

"Isabella," he said. "Step away from Luca and open the door."

The lock clicked behind them.

Another folder contained decoy ledgers - deliberately incomplete versions of the trust accounts, each marked with a different microscopic symbol in the footer.

Luca explained that Giuseppe had distributed separate versions to Adrian, Bernard, two trustees, and an outside bank. If a confidential number later appeared in a transaction, he could identify which copy had leaked.

"Did it work?" Isabella asked.

"Too well."

He opened a comparison file. Three shell-company transfers contained figures that existed only in Bernard's copy. Two others traced to Adrian's.

"Your father knew both were compromised before he died," Luca said.

"Then why keep them close?"

"Because he wanted to know who they would lead him to."

Isabella stared at her father's annotations.

"He treated people like marked banknotes."

"He treated danger like a business problem."

"And how did that work out for him?"

May you like

Luca had no answer.

"Your father made the same mistake you are making now."
