Chapter 1 - The Fall

The ultrasound picture ripped in half before Sarah Vance hit the railing.

"Give it back," Sarah said.

Her voice was low, but both hands had already wrapped around her eight-month belly.

Eleanor Vance stood on the upper landing of the mansion with the two torn pieces pinched between her fingers. Below them, the marble foyer gleamed under a crystal chandelier. Two housemaids had stopped moving. A silver tray trembled in one woman's hands.

Eleanor smiled.

"You don't belong in this family," she said. "And neither does that baby."

Sarah stared at her.

For three years, she had swallowed Eleanor's little insults. The wrong dress. The wrong family. The wrong college. The wrong laugh at dinner. Sarah had told herself it was easier to stay calm for Daniel's sake.

But this was different.

"That was the only print from today's appointment."

"Then maybe you should have protected it better."

Eleanor tore one half again.

"Oops."

Sarah took one step forward.

"Eleanor, stop."

The older woman dropped the pieces over the railing.

Sarah reached without thinking.

Eleanor shoved her.

Hard.

Sarah's heel slid on the polished floor.

Her back struck the balcony rail.

Then her body tipped sideways toward the staircase.

One of the maids screamed.

Sarah saw marble below her. White. Cold. Far too close.

Then two arms caught her.

Arthur Bennett, the Vance family's seventy-year-old butler, had crossed the foyer faster than anyone thought possible. Sarah crashed into his chest instead of the floor. The force drove him to one knee, but he locked both arms around her and kept her stomach away from the marble.

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Sarah gasped.

"My baby."

Arthur looked at her face.

"Can you feel her moving?"

Sarah pressed a shaking hand against her belly.

Nothing.

Up on the landing, Eleanor's smile was gone.

"She slipped," Eleanor said.

Arthur slowly looked up.

"I watched you push her."

"You are an employee."

"I am a witness."

"Arthur."

His face turned cold.

He pulled out his phone.

Eleanor's voice sharpened. "Put that away."

Arthur pressed three numbers.

9-1-1.

Eleanor came down two steps. "You have no idea what you're doing."

Arthur held the phone to his ear.

"Yes. Vance House, 14 West Mercer. A pregnant woman was pushed down the upper landing. Eight months pregnant. Send an ambulance and police."

Sarah suddenly grabbed his sleeve.

"Arthur."

Her face had gone pale.

A warm line of blood was sliding down the inside of her leg.

Arthur looked at it.

Then he heard the dispatcher asking a question.

Before he could answer, the front doors opened.

Daniel Vance stepped inside, rain on his shoulders, staring at his wife on the floor and his mother halfway down the stairs.

"What the hell happened?"

Sarah looked at him through tears.

"Your mother pushed me."

Eleanor did not even blink.

May you like

Then she said the four words that changed the entire room.

"Daniel, she's lying again."
