Chapter 3 - Section Nine

Arthur closed the hospital room door.
Daniel stared at him.
"How do you know what's in the family trust?"
"I've served this family forty-one years."
"That doesn't answer me."
"No," Arthur said. "It doesn't."
He pulled a chair closer.
"When your grandfather, Henry Vance, created the controlling trust, he wrote a provision for succession. Your mother has voting control while she is acting trustee. But when the first legally recognized grandchild in your line is born, thirty-five percent of the voting shares transfer into a separate trust for that child's benefit."
Sarah felt the room get smaller.
Daniel frowned. "Thirty-five percent?"
"Enough to end your mother's control."
"Why have I never heard this?"
Arthur gave him a tired look. "Ask the woman who has chaired every family meeting since your father died."
Sarah put a hand over her stomach.
"So when our daughter is born..."
"Eleanor loses her majority," Arthur said.
Daniel stood.
"No. My mother can be difficult, cruel even, but you're suggesting she tried to hurt my wife because of stock."
Arthur's expression did not change.
"I'm telling you she knew exactly what Sarah's baby changes."
The door opened.
Graham Pike walked in without knocking.
He was sixty, silver-haired, expensive, and calm in the way only lawyers who billed by the hour could afford to be.
"Daniel. Sarah. I'm glad you're both safe."
Sarah laughed once.
"Are you?"
Graham ignored it.
He placed a folder on the table.
"Given today's emotional incident, Eleanor asked me to recommend a temporary plan."
"What kind of plan?" Daniel asked.
"A private medical arrangement. Sarah remains under observation. You sign temporary authority allowing the family office to coordinate security, press inquiries, and certain medical decisions if Sarah becomes incapacitated."
Sarah stared at him.
"You brought medical power-of-attorney papers to the hospital after your client pushed me?"
"They're precautionary."
Arthur took the folder and flipped through it.
Then his face hardened.
"This isn't precautionary."
Graham held out his hand. "Give me that."
Arthur read aloud.
"'In the event of premature delivery, neonatal complications, incapacity, or death of the mother...'"
Daniel snatched the pages.
The next paragraph authorized the Vance family office to determine temporary guardianship arrangements for the child.
Sarah felt ice spread through her chest.
"She planned for my baby before the ambulance even left the house."
Graham's voice stayed smooth.
"That's an unfair interpretation."
Daniel tore the signature page in half.
"Get out."
For the first time, Graham's calm slipped.
"You need to think carefully."
"No. You need to leave."
Graham collected the folder.
At the doorway he paused.
"Your mother is trying to protect this family."
Sarah looked him straight in the eyes.
"From me?"
Graham glanced at her belly.
"From consequences."
He left.
Arthur waited until the footsteps disappeared.
Then he reached inside his jacket and took out an old brass key.
"There's something at Vance House you need to see."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"Records your mother thinks were destroyed."
Arthur closed his fingers around the key.
"But if she knows I still have this, she won't just fire me."
His phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
A single email from Eleanor.

Arthur looked at Daniel.
"She knows."
