Chapter 18 - Grace

Grace had stopped breathing for twenty-three seconds.
A NICU nurse caught it immediately.
By the time Daniel reached the hospital, his daughter was stable again.
Sarah stood beside the incubator with one hand pressed to the glass.
Daniel wrapped his arms around her from behind.
"I can't keep doing this," she whispered.
"What?"
"Thinking we're safe and then finding out we're not."
He rested his cheek against her hair.
"We're going to make a smaller life."
She turned.
"What does that mean?"
"No mansion unless you want it. No board dinners unless they matter. No pretending cruelty is tradition."
Sarah looked at him.
"And the company?"
"I don't know yet."
Arthur entered quietly.
Grace's tiny hand curled around Daniel's finger.
Arthur smiled.
"Strong grip."
Daniel laughed softly.
"Like her mother."
"Poor child," Sarah said.
For the first time in days, the room felt normal.
Then Detective Brooks arrived.
Eleanor had been formally charged with aggravated assault, witness intimidation, evidence tampering, and conspiracy related to the hospital incident.
Malcolm faced attempted arson, weapons charges, and obstruction.
Victor Hale faced conspiracy, financial crimes, and a reopened investigation into Charles Vance's death.
Graham Pike had entered a cooperation agreement.
Sarah listened without smiling.
"Is it over?"
Brooks hesitated.
"Almost."
Daniel noticed.
"What aren't you saying?"
"We found financial records in Victor's office. Your mother's crimes go back farther than the trust manipulation."
Arthur's face tightened.
"How far?"
"Twenty-six years."
Sarah knew before Brooks said the name.
"Thomas Reed."
Brooks nodded.
Her father had not simply sued Vance Industries.
He had discovered a workers' compensation fund being drained through fake consulting contracts.
When he threatened to report it, Eleanor and Victor destroyed his career.
They did not kill him.
But they made sure every major accounting firm in the region believed he was dishonest.
Sarah looked down at Grace.
"My dad spent the rest of his life thinking he failed."
Daniel took her hand.
"No. He found the truth."
"He died before anyone believed him."
Arthur reached into his coat.
"There may be one person left who did."
He handed Sarah a sealed letter.
The handwriting was Charles Vance's.
TO THOMAS REED - NEVER SENT.
Sarah opened it with shaking hands.
Charles had written an apology.
He admitted Thomas was right.
He promised to expose Eleanor and Victor.
At the bottom was one final line.
IF I FAIL, I HOPE OUR CHILDREN ARE BRAVER THAN WE WERE.
Sarah cried silently.
Daniel read it twice.
Then Detective Brooks's phone rang.
She listened.
Her face changed.
"What?" Daniel asked.
"Eleanor wants to speak to Sarah."
Sarah wiped her tears.
"No."
Brooks nodded.
"That's what I expected."
Then she added, "She says it's about your father."
Sarah looked at Charles's letter.
Daniel said, "You don't owe her anything."
Sarah folded the letter.
"No."
May you like
She looked toward Grace.
"But I owe myself the truth."
