Chapter 15 - Bloodline

Daniel requested his birth records.
Most were sealed.
Arthur knew why.
He came to the hospital with an old photograph of Charles and Eleanor holding a newborn Daniel.
"Your parents had trouble conceiving," Arthur said.
Daniel stared at him.
"You knew?"
"I knew there were doctors. Private trips. Arguments."
"Am I my father's son?"
Arthur did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Eleanor's attorney called from the county detention center.
She wanted to speak to Daniel.
He refused.
Then Graham Pike asked for immunity.
Detective Brooks brought him in.
Graham looked twenty years older.
"Eleanor kept DNA results in a private legal file," he said.
Daniel's voice was flat.
"Say it."
"Charles Vance was not your biological father."
Sarah, pale but awake in the hospital bed, reached for Daniel's hand.
Graham continued.
"Eleanor had an affair with Victor Hale."
Daniel pulled his hand away.
"No."
Arthur closed his eyes.
Graham slid a copy across the table.
A paternity test.
Victor Hale: probability of paternity, 99.98%.
Daniel stood so fast the chair fell.
"So Victor is my father?"
"Biologically."
"And my mother spent my entire life pretending he was just a board member?"
"Charles knew."
Daniel looked sick.
"Why?"
"Because Henry Vance's trust passed control through legally recognized descendants, not genetics. Charles acknowledged you as his son. The clause still applies."
Sarah's voice was quiet.
"So Grace still triggers Section Nine."
"Yes."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"All this bloodline obsession, and she was the one lying."
Graham looked down.
"There is more."
Of course there was.
Victor had helped Eleanor hide the affair, then helped her shift company money through shell vendors. Over the years, their secrets became leverage.
When Charles tried to expose them, the pressure intensified.
"Did they kill my father?" Daniel asked.
Arthur went rigid.
Graham swallowed.
"I don't know."
Daniel leaned over the table.
"Wrong answer."
"I know Victor tampered with Charles's car maintenance records before the crash."
Silence.
Daniel's face emptied.
His father had died when Daniel was twenty in what police called a highway accident.
Arthur whispered, "Oh, God."
Detective Brooks stood.
"We're reopening that file."
Then a nurse rushed in.
"Mr. Vance?"
Daniel turned.
"Your wife isn't in her room."
His heart stopped.
"What?"
"She was here ten minutes ago."
The bed was empty.
The wheelchair was gone.

And on the pillow lay a note.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR WIFE AGAIN.
