Chapter 11 - The House Key

Vivian’s face hardened. “I did not use your computer.”

Ryan stared at her. “You were there.”

“So were twelve staff members.”

Elena asked, “Why were you staying at his townhouse?”

Ryan answered. “My apartment was being renovated.”

Vivian corrected him. “There was a gas leak.”

Ryan looked at her. “You told me renovation.”

Vivian’s eyes shifted.

A tiny mistake.

Elena caught it.

“What gas leak?”

Vivian said nothing.

Ryan’s voice dropped. “Mom.”

“The building had an inspection issue.”

“For three weeks?”

Vivian pushed back from the table. “This is becoming absurd.”

“No,” Elena said. “It’s becoming chronological.”

She began writing dates on the whiteboard.

Two months ago: fake Ryan opens Box 17.

Six weeks ago: Northline begins receiving accelerated payments.

Five weeks ago: Vivian stays at Ryan’s townhouse.

Four weeks ago: Harbor Seventeen receives money from Northline.

Last night: Daniel Cross enters Ward’s office.

Today: recorder planted.

Vivian watched the timeline take shape.

Ryan asked quietly, “What happened six weeks ago?”

Nobody answered.

Then Vivian’s assistant knocked on the conference-room door.

“Mrs. Vale? There’s a woman downstairs asking for Mr. Ryan Vale.”

Ryan frowned. “Who?”

“She says her name is Claire Mercer.”

His expression changed.

Elena noticed immediately.

“Your ex-girlfriend?”

Ryan nodded.

The woman whose assault allegation he had allowed Daniel to “handle.”

Claire refused to come upstairs.

Ryan, Elena, and Marcus met her in a quiet coffee shop across the street.

She was thirty-six, red-haired, sharply dressed, and looked at Ryan with an anger that had matured rather than faded.

“You finally asked questions?” she said.

Ryan swallowed. “Too late.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Also late.”

Elena respected her instantly.

Claire turned to Elena. “You’re Thomas Ward’s daughter.”

Elena’s breath caught. “You knew my father?”

“No. But Daniel Cross said his name once.”

“When?”

“The night he paid me to withdraw my complaint.”

Ryan went still.

Claire continued. “I refused the money. He said women like me thought truth mattered because we’d never seen what happened to people who challenged the Vale family.”

Vivian was not there, but the sentence filled the empty chair she might have occupied.

“What exactly did he say about my father?” Elena asked.

Claire looked at her.

“He said, ‘Thomas Ward thought documents could save him too.’”

Elena felt the floor disappear beneath her.

Ryan whispered, “Claire, why didn’t you tell anyone?”

She stared at him.

“I did.”

She reached into her bag and placed a copy of an old email on the table.

Sent nine years earlier.

To Ryan Vale.

Subject: DANIEL CROSS THREATENED ME.

Ryan stared at it.

“I never saw this.”

Claire’s eyes were cold.

“Someone replied from your account.”

Elena looked at the printed page.

May you like

The reply was one sentence.

DO NOT CONTACT ME AGAIN.
