Chapter 16 - 3:14 A.M.

The lie was smaller than Elena feared and worse than Ryan wanted.
He had been in London, but at 3:14 a.m. New York time he was on a private flight back to the United States.
“Why hide that?” Marcus asked.
Ryan stared at the table. “Because the flight landed in Teterboro before sunrise. I drove to my father’s house. We had a fight.”
“About what?”
“Money. Control. He told me someone had used my signature. I thought he was accusing me.”
Elena leaned forward. “Did he mention my father?”
Ryan swallowed. “Yes.”
The room went still.
“He said, ‘Ward has proof.’ I asked what proof. He told me to stay out of it.”
“And then?”
“I left angry.”
“What time?”
“Around seven.”
Thomas Ward died that evening.
Ryan had not caused it. But he had hidden a meeting that placed him in New York the same day.
“Why tell police you returned the next night?”
Ryan’s face twisted with shame. “My mother told me to.”
Everyone looked at Vivian.
She did not deny it.
“You created a false alibi for your son,” Elena said.
“I created distance from an investigation that would have destroyed him in the press before anyone knew what happened.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
Again, no excuse.
That was becoming its own kind of punishment.
Marcus said, “Evan knows this because Daniel knew it.”
Ryan nodded. “Daniel arranged the flight.”
Elena stood and walked away from the table.
The family had spent a decade manufacturing protection. Now every protection looked like guilt.
That was the trap.
At 4:00 p.m., federal investigators formally interviewed Ryan and Vivian separately. Ward’s forensic team turned over preserved logs and the Box 17 materials through counsel.
Elena was not present for the interviews.
She went back to her office and sat alone in her father’s old conference room.
On the wall hung a framed saying Thomas used with young analysts:
IF THE STORY IS TOO CLEAN, CHECK WHO CLEANED IT.
Elena stared at the sentence.
Then something clicked.
Evan’s threat had been too clean.
He had proof against everyone except himself.
Even the Thomas Ward recording named Evan, but it did not prove he caused Thomas’s death.
Daniel created alibis.
Daniel created access.
Daniel planted evidence.
Daniel served Arthur, Vivian, and possibly Evan.
What did Daniel want?
Elena called Nina.
“Pull every recent Harbor payment and sort by final beneficiary. Not vendors. Humans.”
An hour later, Nina called back.
“Elena, there’s a recurring beneficiary.”
“Evan?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
A name appeared on Elena’s screen.
MARGARET CROSS.
Elena frowned.
“Who is Margaret Cross?”
Nina answered quietly.
May you like
“Daniel’s wife.”
Then she added, “She died eight years ago.”
