Chapter 2 - The File Nobody Was Supposed to Open

Elena did not read the message twice.
She smiled at Ryan with the kind of polite expression women learned to use when they needed to leave without showing fear.
“Thank you for dinner.”
“You’re leaving?” Ryan asked.
“Yes.”
Vivian laid the business card on the table with deliberate care. “Sit down.”
Elena buttoned her coat. “That wasn’t a request when you said it before, either.”
Ryan rose. “I’ll walk you out.”
“No.”
His face changed. Not anger. Embarrassment again.
Elena hated that she felt sorry for him.
She left the restaurant through the hotel lobby, crossed polished marble beneath a chandelier the size of a small house, and stepped into the cold Manhattan night. Her phone buzzed again.
CALL ME FROM SOMEWHERE PUBLIC. — MARCUS
Marcus Bell was Ward Forensic Advisory’s senior investigator and Elena’s closest friend at work. He did not panic. He barely used exclamation points.
She walked two blocks before entering a twenty-four-hour pharmacy, then called him from the cosmetics aisle.
“What happened?”
“We got a remote-access alert at 8:43,” Marcus said. “Someone tried to open the Vale archive.”
Elena went still.
Ward Forensic Advisory had hundreds of files. Only twelve were in the restricted archive. The Vale file was one of them.
“From where?”
“Your credentials.”
“That’s impossible.”
“I know.”
Six months earlier, Elena’s firm had been quietly retained by a consortium of lenders reviewing unusual vendor payments tied to Vale Meridian Hotels. The audit was preliminary, tightly compartmentalized, and legally sensitive. Elena had not been assigned to it because of a conflict-screening rule: she had met Ryan Vale at a charity compliance panel two weeks after the engagement began.
Tonight was their first date.
She had not told him about the audit.
She had not even seen the full case file.
“Was anything downloaded?” she asked.
“We don’t know yet. The login failed twice, then succeeded for nineteen seconds.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
“Lock my account.”
“Already done.”
“Who knew I was meeting Ryan tonight?”
Silence.
“Elena.”
“Who?”
“Me. Nina. Calendar support. And whoever could see the office booking system.”
That was too many people.
A black sedan slowed outside the pharmacy windows.
Elena stepped behind a display.
“Marcus, I think I’m being followed.”
“Stay inside.”
The sedan stopped.
Rear door opened.
Ryan stepped out.
Elena stared through the glass.
“That’s him,” she whispered.
“The billionaire?”
“Yes.”
Ryan entered the store alone, scanning the aisles until he saw her.
He walked over slowly, hands visible.
“I’m not here to make you sign anything,” he said.
Elena ended the call.
“That’s a low bar.”
Ryan took a breath. “My mother knows your company.”
“I noticed.”
“She told me to never contact you again.”
Elena folded her arms. “Then why are you here?”
“Because five minutes after you left, she called our general counsel and said, ‘Ward is active again.’”
The fluorescent lights suddenly felt too bright.
Ryan looked genuinely shaken.
“And then,” he continued, “she told him to destroy something before midnight.”
Elena’s phone buzzed a third time.
Marcus.
This time there was an attachment.
A security still from Ward’s office lobby.

Taken forty minutes earlier.
The man entering the building was wearing a Vale Meridian employee badge.
