Chapter 18 - The Man Everyone Trusted

Marcus did not go home.
Police moved him to a secure location while investigators traced the threatening message through a prepaid routing service.
Ryan looked physically ill.
“Martin practically raised me.”
Vivian sat very still. “He raised you when Arthur and I were busy fighting.”
Elena ignored the family guilt and focused on the structure.
Arthur’s estate trust funded Daniel’s operations.
Martin controlled the trust.
Martin had legal access to legacy company records.
Martin could authorize old payments without triggering Ryan’s attention.
Martin also knew Thomas Ward.
“What did my father think of him?” Elena asked Vivian.
Vivian’s answer was immediate. “He hated him.”
“Why?”
“He said Martin always asked legal questions about factual problems.”
That sounded exactly like Thomas.
Investigators searched archived engagement letters and found Martin’s name everywhere. He had negotiated Thomas Ward’s original retention. He had also negotiated Thomas’s final invoice after his death.
Then Nina found a deleted memo in an old data room.
FROM: THOMAS WARD
TO: ARTHUR VALE
SUBJECT: M. HALE CONFLICT
The body was short.
Martin Hale is not merely advising you. I believe he has a financial interest in at least two entities receiving Harbor funds. Do not disclose my findings to him.
Ryan whispered, “Dad showed him anyway.”
Vivian looked at him. “Arthur showed Martin everything.”
There it was.
Not a criminal mastermind hiding behind a curtain.
A trusted adviser sitting beside the curtain for decades.
At 6:30 p.m., federal agents arrived at Martin Hale’s office.
He was gone.
His assistant said he had left two hours earlier carrying one briefcase and no coat.
His phone was off.
His car remained in the garage.
Elena asked investigators one question.
“Where would someone like him go if he believed records mattered more than escape?”
Ryan answered before anyone else.
“The old family office.”
It occupied three rooms above a shuttered Vale property in Lower Manhattan. Arthur had used it before Vale Meridian moved uptown.
Agents went first.
Elena, Ryan, and Vivian followed only after the building was secured.
They found Martin in the records room.
Not fleeing.
Burning papers in a steel waste bin.
The sprinkler system had activated, flooding the floor.
Two agents pinned him against a file cabinet.
He laughed when he saw Vivian.
“You finally brought outsiders into the family.”
Vivian stared at him with open disgust.
“You threatened my son.”
Martin smiled. “I protected your son.”
“You used him.”
“I used everyone.”
Elena stepped forward.
Martin’s eyes settled on her.
“Thomas had your same expression,” he said.
Elena’s pulse hammered.
“What happened to my father?”
Martin smiled again.
“I didn’t kill him.”
“Who did?”
“I said I didn’t kill him.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
For the first time, Martin’s smile disappeared.
Then a voice came from the doorway behind the agents.
Daniel Cross.

Wet from the rain, hands raised.
“I did.”
