Chapter 7 - The Signature

Ryan crossed the room in three steps.
“That is not my signature.”
Vivian’s expression hardened. “It is your name.”
“That is not what I said.”
Elena studied the ledger without touching it. The signature looked smooth, confident, almost too clean.
“What year?” she asked.
Vivian answered, “Eleven years ago.”
Ryan did the math instantly. “I was in London.”
“You signed many things while traveling.”
“Digitally. Not like that.”
Marcus photographed the page.
Vivian looked irritated. “You were invited to listen, not collect evidence.”
Marcus lowered the phone. “Those are frequently the same activity.”
Elena looked at the transfer line.
$8,400,000 moved from a hotel redevelopment account to Harbor Seventeen Holdings.
Authorized by Ryan Vale.
“Why would my father protect Ryan?” she asked.
Vivian’s gaze returned to her. “Because Arthur wanted to report the transfer as theft committed by our son.”
Ryan laughed once, stunned. “Dad thought I stole eight million dollars?”
“He was furious and frightened.”
“You forged my name?”
Vivian did not answer.
Ryan’s voice rose. “Did you forge my name?”
“Yes.”
The word hit the glass room like a dropped plate.
Ryan stepped back.
Elena watched his face rearrange itself around a betrayal twenty years in the making.
Vivian continued, controlled again. “Thomas proved the signature was not yours. That is why I paid him. Not for silence. For his work.”
“Then why was he afraid of you?” Elena asked.
Vivian’s eyes narrowed. “He wasn’t.”
“We have his letter.”
That surprised her.
Real surprise.
Elena saw it.
“What letter?” Vivian asked.
Ryan looked between them.
Elena did not quote it. “The one where he wrote that if you learned what Arthur asked him to verify, his safety might be at risk.”
Vivian’s face changed again, but not to guilt.
To anger.
“At risk from me?”
“That’s what it says.”
Vivian stood so quickly her chair rolled backward.
“Your father did not fear me.”
“Then who?”
Vivian looked toward the conference-room door.
Nobody was there.
Her voice dropped.
“Daniel Cross.”
Ryan’s shoulders locked.
Vivian walked to the glass and stared out over Manhattan.
“Daniel worked for Arthur before he worked for me. He handled security at the Carlton. Arthur trusted him with everything.”
“The same Daniel who entered my office last night?” Elena asked.
Vivian turned sharply. “What?”
Ryan said, “You didn’t know?”
“No.”
Marcus watched her closely.
Vivian reached for her phone.
Elena said, “Don’t call him.”
Vivian ignored her and dialed.
The line rang.
Once.
Twice.
Then a phone began vibrating inside the conference room.
Everyone froze.
The sound came from the black leather credenza behind Vivian.
Ryan moved first.
He opened the cabinet.
Inside was Daniel Cross’s phone.
Beside it lay a small digital recorder.

The red light was blinking.
They had been recorded the entire time.
