Chapter 1 - Not That Much

Claire Whitmore saw the white powder fall into her wine and understood, in one cold second, that her marriage was already over.

She had only gone back for her phone.

That was the part she would remember later—the stupid little rectangle of black glass lying beside the pantry door, the thing she had almost decided she could live without until morning.

The dining room beyond the half-open door glowed with chandelier light.

Vanessa Cross stood at Claire’s place setting in a black evening dress, one hand around a tiny folded packet.

Daniel stood beside her.

Her husband.

His eyes were not on the packet.

They were on the hallway.

Checking.

Watching.

Making sure Claire was not coming.

Vanessa tipped the packet.

A small dusting of white fell into the red wine.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Not that much.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Vanessa whispered, “She’ll be fine.”

The spoon touched the glass with a soft click.

Claire’s fingers tightened around the pantry door.

She wanted to step out.

She wanted to throw the glass across the room.

She wanted to ask Daniel what kind of man stood three feet from his wife’s chair and helped another woman put something into her drink.

Instead, she stayed still.

That saved her.

Daniel turned his head toward the pantry.

Claire eased backward before the light could catch her face.

His shoes moved once across the hardwood.

Then again.

She pressed herself against the dark hallway wall.

“Did you hear something?” Vanessa asked.

Daniel stopped.

Claire could hear the blood rushing in her ears.

“I thought—”

A phone buzzed on the table.

Daniel cursed softly and turned away.

The next minutes moved fast, and every answer only exposed a deeper part of Daniel’s plan.

Walk out the front door?

Then she noticed something.

A message was already open on Daniel’s shared tablet, mirrored through the home network notification preview.

Only six words were visible.

MAKE SURE SHE SIGNS BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Claire stared at them.

The wine was not the whole plan.

Someone wanted her unconscious.

And someone needed her signature first.

A shadow passed beneath the powder-room door.

Daniel’s voice came from the hallway.

“Claire?”

May you like

She locked the screen.

Then the doorknob moved.
